I do love how there are some moments that suggest Gladys... Kind of sucks as a witch? She puts Alex's parents and his classmates under her spell to keep herself alive, but we never see that really working, or if she even knows a spell for that. She doesn't lie down suffering again after that one scene, but she doesn't look visually any different (unless she puts on her make-up and disguise) nor does she act particularly different*. She also say she'll know if Alex tells on her, but she very well might be lying, and relying on her threats and Alex's fear of her. After all, she did not know of Justine spying on them, only noticing when Marcus was alerted, and only finding out when the teacher fell asleep during her stake-out. The only thing we see her definitely be competent at is hypnotizing people and manipulating others.

I don't know, I just really like the idea of a villain with actual magic powers, but whose actual control over people is fear and smoke and mirrors. Kinda like Karaba or the the Wicked Witch of the West (in the book).

*there is one detail that suggests she does know how to do this magic: when she first talks to Marcus, she calls tuberculosis "consumption", something that immediately strikes the principal odd as an old expression. If Gladys really is so old that she falls back on out-of-use language, than she might even not be Alex's aunt at all, only having tricked her way somehow into the family. So she might actually be very proficient with magic. Still doesn't change that she was beaten by a third grader at her own game

Maybrook, PA, Summer '25

The bottle charm on the front mirror sprung back and forth as Detective Nancy Brown's Chevrolet rocked across the bumpy road leading to Maybrook, Pennsylvania. She had spent the night on the highway—Nirvana blasting on full volume and she, fuelled up on gas, caffeine, and sheer fucking pride.

The small, corked vial was filled with rusty nails, a red thread, and ash. After her first encounter with the witch, Gladys, while shadowing in the Supernatural Crimes Division, her superior had shown her how to make the charms. Old Carter had sworn on them, claimed they would keep evil out, but in Nancy's experience it had done fuck-all. Gladys was in her mind, in her dreams, in her body every damn day, the motherfucking parasite cunt.

The radio's volume turned up on its own for the news, sending Nancy into near heart-attack. It was a local station, middle-aged man speaking, spotty signal: "… Maybrook's Police Department are still looking for the 17 missing children that vanished during the night of May 7th. Any hints are appreciated."

She switched the radio off. Seventeen. Jesus Christ. This cat-and-mouse game had been going on for years, since the very start of her career in the SCD. Wherever Gladys struck, Nancy went. Yet either she was long gone by the time she arrived and had merely left a trinket for her—a snapped, thorny twig with her dried blood, a previous victim's lock of hair, a hardened drop of candle wax with a symbol scratched into it—or they came face to face. Regardless, Gladys fled each time and dropped off the radar, and each time, too, Nancy was on her trail scouring every newspaper for one mysterious crime scene or another; that was how she'd found her now.

She reached for the soaked paper cup in the cup holder and found that she had run out of overprized gas station coffee. Her destination was just down the road, according to Google Maps; surely they would have a functional coffee machine. It tended to be the only thing working in small town police stations.
