Some Things I Hate About Glee
honestly there are some things on glee that really bothered me, here we go.
Santana did not live in Lima Heights AdjacentÂ
Lima Heights Adjacent was the âhoodâ or the âprojectsâ of Lima. If you donât know what the Projects are, itâs an apartment complex owned by the government for poorer, lower income families. Public Housing. I know. I have lived in Public Housing, in a neighborhood and surrounded by neighborhoods that are named like Lima Heights. However, in Britney, when Carl is about to put her and Brittany under for a dental exam, she convinces Carl to give her anesthesia because her dad is a doctor with great benefits. She would not have lived in Public Housing. She would not have lived in Public Housing.Â
What really bothered me about this is that it was clearly RIBâs way of making her seem more bitchy and badass, and didnât actually think about what they were saying. Because if you live in the bad part of town, youâre automatically a bitchy hood rat always looking for a fight. Even though Santana did not live in Lima Heights. She couldnât have. Her family made too much money. But because she was a Hispanic girl who always had an attitude, she was put into this box. And I hate it. I hate it. I fucking hate it.
The Jane Addams Glee Club (And just the Hairography Episode in general)
Once again, RIB has incensed me. Hairography is literally one of my least favorite episodes of Glee because of the way this Glee Club is portrayed. The Jane Addams Glee Club is a Glee Club at a reform school for girls. The school is full of âteen juvenile delinquentsâ (x). Most of these girls are black, and have names such as Aphasia, Jayelle, and Shandonza. What. The. Fuck. Why are they given these names? Shadonza? What?!
Also, the way Rachel reacts. I do recall her saying that they use their hair as a distraction, because their dancing and singing wasnât that good. âHairography,â is what she called it exactly. FIRST OF ALL, their vocals were great. Their dancing, while provocative, was better than literally anything the New Directions did in Season One. And the way Mr.Schue takes this and runs with it, accepting Rachelâs statement like it isnât offensive at all, disgusts me. Why is it that when a black person wears their hair in its natural form, or wears braids or big hair its to be âdistracting?â Which leads me to my next point.
The only major black female character on Glee who wears her natural hair is Jane. Not Mercedes, not Madame Tibedeux, not Roz Washington. Thatâs where the list ends...huh. Thereâs one male Warbler who wears his natural hair, but he doesnât have any lines. The rest of the black male characters on Glee wore their hair short, cut down to the scalp almost. (Matt, Jake, and David Warbler.)Â
How come we never saw anyone with box-braids on Glee? Never saw any dreadlocks, even though Whoopi has them. They chose to cover them up with a scarf. The only girl who wears an afro is Jane, and even then, there is a snide comment about it from Madison, a white girl (once again, natural hair is regraded as âupstagingâ and âdistracting). Mercedes always wore her hair straight, even though Amber Riley has gorgeous natural hair.Â
Oh, and Darren Crissâs natural hair. As we all know, Darren has gorgeous curls. These curls were smothered under ridiculous amounts of hair gel, and when they were let loose, they made fun of it. (broccoli head, terrorist) And it angers me.
Glee is a great show. I love it to death. But some things are just...ugh. And these are a few of them.
