Glen Spey 15 1995/2010 CA Authentic Collection (56,1 %)

Diageo-destilleriet Glen Spey i Rothes er svært viktig i blenden J&B, ellers er det rimelig ukjent som single malt; den eneste tilgjengelige offisielle tapningen er en 12 år gammel Flora & Fauna-tapning, ellers har det kommet noen få spesialutgaver, blant annet en Special Releases-tapning for en god del år siden. Denne tapningen kommer fra Cadenhead, og ble destillert i 1995 og tappet i juli 2010 fra et bourbon hogshead som ga 241 flasker.

På nesen: Vanilje, litt grønne epler, eiketre, spearmint og lime. Fruktig, og litt mineralske noter også. Smaken var preget av vanilje, honning, mint og grønne epler. Søt. Avslutningen var ganske lang og frisk, med sitrus, vanilje og eiketre. Med vann tilsatt kom det til mer sitrus på nesen, et tydeligere alkoholstikk, estere og et hint av aske. Smaken fikk også noe mer sitrus, tropisk frukt og malt. Avslutningen ble litt tørrere nå, med honning og trebitterhet.

Kanskje ikke verdens mest komplekse whisky, snarere litt endimensjonal, men absolutt en ok dram, lettdrikkelig og medgjørllig. Mye friskhet, sitrus og tropisk frukt – en såkalt «delikat» og lite krevende whisky som antagelig ikke vil provosere spesielt mange.

Review #164: Glen Spey 12 Flora & Fauna

This review is part of a series on Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range.

Founded by James Stuart & Co., a local grain merchant, Glen Spey distillery started out in 1878 as an oatmeal mill under the name ‘Mill of Rothes’. Over the following years, the proprietors installed distilling equipment in the mill, and when it was sold to W. & A. Gilbey in 1887, the site was renamed to Glen Spey distillery. Gilbey’s was founded in London in 1857 by brothers Walter, Albert and Henry Gilbey and started out as a wine merchant and and producer of gin. The purchase of Glen Spey distillery marked their first foray into the whisky trade, and in fact this was the fist time, a Scottish distillery was owned by an English company. Gilbey’s went on to acquire Strathmill and Knockando distillery subsequently, and it was not long until Glen Spey became the corner stone malt in their Spey Royal blended Scotch. In 1962 Gilbey’s merged with United Wine Traders to form International Distillers & Vintners (IDV). Following the merger, Glen Spey became an important component in J&B blended whisky, and has remained so to this day. The production capacity was doubled in 1970, when a second pair of stills was installed, and in 1997 IDV - who had become a part of Grand Metropolitan in 1972 - merged with Guinness to form Diageo, the distillery’s present owners.

Glen Spey is one of only a few distilleries in Scotland that uses purifiers on their spirit stills. These devices sit between the lyne arm of the still and the condensers and return some of the spirit vapours back into the bulb of the still. This increases the amount of reflux and thereby the amount of copper contact, that the spirit has before entering the condenser, with the effect that the spirit is ‘purified’ and becomes lighter and more delicate in character.

Because Glen Spey is in such high demand for blended Scotch, there have been almost no distillery bottlings over the years. In 2001 Diageo added this 12 year old bottling of Glen Spey to their Flora & Fauna range, making it the only readily available official bottling. Other, less available official bottlings include a rare 12 year old Manager’s Dram cask strength bottling that was bottled exclusively for employees in 2008, and an equally rare 13 year old Manager’s Choice bottling from 2009.

The label of the Glen Spey 12 year old Flora & Fauna features a Goldcrest, a small bird that inhabits in the pines around the ruins of Rothes castle in the vicinity of the distillery.

Eye: The colour of the whisky is yellow gold. Nose: Rather astringent with citrus, pear, pine sap, ginger, cow stable, brine and a hint of peat. Palate: Herbaceous and sour with basil, rosemary, unripe grapefruit, grapes, black pepper, chilli, slight heather honey and very soft smoke. It starts out medium sweet but turns increasingly dry towards the finish. Finish: Shortish, bone dry and spicy with vegetal notes, bitter almonds, soft oak and smoke. Verdict: The Glen Spey 12 is a dry and rather astringent single malt. It is well balanced and flavourful with a lovely backdrop of gentle peat smoke, yet with not a huge lot of complexity. 80/100
