Hi you should talk about your partners if you want because its so lovely to hear people talk about people they love but sometimes it feels like no one wants to listen, so this is me saying- go nuts
this is suchhh a sweet ask thank you hon ily!!
everyone i’m in love with has challenged me to accept the parts of myself that don’t make sense and embrace the messiness beyond normative boxes, even when my instinct is to be nervous and uncomfortable. they’ve made me so much more comfortable with change than i ever would’ve thought possible and made me a better person to others and myself. my girlfriend told me two days ago that i fall for people who protect me, and it’s so true; they all take such profound care of me, materially and emotionally, and make me feel so deeply cherished and understood. literally i’m so lucky to know them 💞💜💙❣️💓💖
my girlfriend and i have been together for almost 5 1/2 years, i’ve been in love with her for a year more than that, and i know it’s a bit cliché but i embrace it: i’m still just as giddy about her as i was at 18. she’s attended the funeral of everything i thought i knew about myself and put in the work to love me like no one i’d known before her ever had. i’ve learned so much about self-compassion from the unbelievable and endless love she has for versions of myself that make me want to do nothing but wince, and i have so much respect for her sheer strength. she’s one of the most determined and generous and careful people i know—she’s the epitome of femme chivalry, and she truly knows me better than i know myself. i’d trust her to save my life even if she hated my guts. i wanna work to fit together with her for the rest of my life.
i first met my datemate through faer incredibly kind and thoughtful and understanding comments on a large amount of my writing, and that’s carried through the entirety of our friendship and relationship: there’s nothing i’ve told faer that fae hasn’t responded to with an immense amount of care and thoughtfulness and love, from the annoyances in my day to serious health crises to things that made me laugh lately. i’ve truly felt the effort and intentionality fae has put into every moment of getting to know me ever deeper, and things we’re discussing for the first time, even perspectives fae has never heard of before, fae approaches with such openness and nuance and trust that it’s as if fae has considered it for years. i’m continually awed by how much love fae has for the world and how consistently fae puts that into practice with faer hands and heart.
i’ll confess i saved this ask for maybe a week and a half because i wanted to wait to see if the people included within it would increase lol, and i’m glad i did because i’ll take any opportunity to be baffled and delighted by the way i wake up to find he’s been trying to single-handedly construct my self-esteem overnight, patched up walls i never realized were crumbling. i have no idea how he knew me so well so quickly, and i’m nothing short of honored by how precisely he’s used that understanding to comfort and care for and challenge me. christ, everyone i love knows what i need before i do, and he’s held me every time i’ve clawed my way to being able to ask. if you told me a year ago that it wouldn’t bother me at all when i was late for plans week after week, when i chose my body over my work, when i threw the instructions of the medical establishment out the window, i would’ve thought it impossible, but somewhere along the way he had so much grace for and faith in me that i couldn’t keep from practicing that, too.
last but certainly not least because i’m a relationship anarchist and such concepts are irrelevant, i’m not partners with a dear friend of mine but we are having a fun gay time, and he’s the embodiment of everything i’ve ever read about the antivenom of historical queer humor. everyone i love has made me laugh harder than i would’ve thought possible on some of the worst days of my life, and his wit and vibrance have absolutely buoyed me through some brutal experiences. the way he thinks about the world has expanded my understanding of myself as a queer and disabled person, and he’s made it so clear that i never need to worry about losing his respect when my perspective differs from his. his storytelling is an art i’m always awed to experience.
i really can’t overstate how much freer i am for knowing these folks and the other close friends in my life, i absolutely wish this kind of bold and wild queerness and adoration in everyone’s lives 🖤❤️💖
