okay maybe i’m stupid, but I just noticed that Judas’s “I only want to know” line in superstar is a direct parallel to Jesus’s “I only want to say” in gethsemane. don’t talk to me for the next 24 hours.

Symbolism? Symbolism:

Jesus' batik on his waist is the same as the secondary batik I gave paulsus explained here under the name parang slobok.

Judas wears slobok (left) and kawung (right), the slobok contains truntum elements and beras tumpah. All of which except for truntum is known to be worn for mourning and for placing on the coffin. The kawung contains a cross shaped filler and teardrop shaped spirals which isnt traditional but I pulled to represent everything spiralling out of his control.

This is what I went with for Jesus' primary design, it's vines (lung lungan batik motif as explained in yellowry's batik breakdown) of acacia branches and the phoenix with beras tumpah filler linking to Judas' pattern.

Acacia is a common tree back then in biblical times, the wood used to construct the ark of covenant in the old testament (jesus as the fulfillment of a covenant and also a carpenter by original trade), and also the flowers in victorian era flower language means secret love. As bonuses, its also used to make aromatherapy oils as a nod to jesus' anointment, *and* has thorny branches as another link to the crown of thorns.

The phoenix bird is a common traditional motif brought by chinese diaspora in Indonesia since many centuries ago so i thought the death and resurrection meaning is clear, but i added the scattered cross filler pattern in its body anyway and i clipped its wings too like in paulsus' batik.

This is the corresponding tumpal, usually its the head of sarung, a different but similar to wraps but i took creative liberties bcs i reeeaaaally wanted to give jesus a clear pucuk rebung motif already. As i have talked about for paulsus, it symbolises a connection to god bcs theyre triangles pointing upwards, but this is how pucuk rebung is most clearly seen. Reused the acacia lung motif in them but also theres the more complete look of a truntum but still not quite, as the only proper truntum star is in the middle with the 8 petals, and its surrounded with the 6 petaled truntum stars and finally a straight up cross, which is also in 2kjudas' kawung batik.
