Comin just for you :)
1950s aesthetic but its creepy, is that even a trope cuz it feels like it
not you sending me this after we just talked abt dont worry darling loll
No | rather not | I dunno | I guess | Sure | [Yes] | [my feelings are complicated] | FUCK yes | Oh god you don’t even know
its def a thing. i feel like its like an extension of suburban gothic horror that sorta takes that vibe to its peak by utilizing pieces from a time period that i think most people regard as like Thee height of suburban culture at least in the us.
my feelings on the trope are largely positive, because i love suburban gothic, and i absolutely get why a 50s aesthetic would be someones go-to for that sort of story, as stated above, but i also feel like a lot of folks end up just slapping a housewife with a too-wide smile onto a story to give it that vibe without rly engaging with like what it is that can make that part of our past feel so ominous, or how to relate it back to like the present issues that extend from it.
at best it feels kinda half-assed and at worst it comes off like the creator has this idea that stuff like extreme conformity, consumerism, societal isolation and bigotry, etc. only exist in the past. big lol.
also not a huge fan of how there seems to be this wave of folks using vintage aesthetics in horror movies not bc they want to tell a horror story rooted in that time period but because they want to tell any horror story and happen to like the aesthetic(and/or know itll help it take off on tiktok or whatever)
