If you alt+tab during Koishi's second survival spellcard from Subterranean Animism while playing in fullscreen, you can get back the regular spellcard background instead of having the black one. This was pointed out by Bravidunno at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiHvDybn2Hs.

It seems this also works if you play in window mode and maximize to full screen.

Weird timers in Subterranean Animism

Similarly to Mountain of Faith, in Subterranean Animism if you fastforward through the dialogue you are able to see a different number of seconds briefly on the timer, before the actual countdown for the nonspell begins.

The second when you beat the midboss will be shown for a short moment at the beginning of the boss' first nonspell, before the timer is changed to that of the actual boss' nonspell.

While in Mountain of Faith, Sanae seemed to be an exception to this rule (showing a different number of seconds at the beginning of the boss fight than the number of seconds at which you killed the midboss), in Subterranean Animism there are no exceptions and all stages that have a midboss fight will present the timer oddity when the boss fight begins.

I will continue to document this behaviour for the games that follow and have it.

Strange timer between spellcards in Extra stage (SA and UFO)

In Subterranean Animism, when 秘法「九字刺し」 Esoterica "Nine Syllable Stabs" ends, the timer will start counting from 59 downwards. However, it resets back to 59 once 奇跡「ミラクルフルーツ」 Miracle "Miracle Fruit" begins. And when 奇跡「ミラクルフルーツ」 Miracle "Miracle Fruit" ends, the timer will again count from 59 downwards and will reset once 神徳「五穀豊穣ライスシャワー」 Divine Virtue "Bumper Crop Rice Shower" starts.

These details can be easily missed as it's only noticeable in the miliseconds part. In Undefined Fantastic Object this change is more visible.

In Undefined Fantastic Object, when 傘符「大粒の涙雨」 Umbrella Sign "Lightly Falling Large Raindrops" ends, the timer will start counting from 59 downwards. It counts until 57 then it resets to 59 again when 驚雨「ゲリラ台風」 Surprising Rain "Guerrilla Typhoon" begins.

And when 驚雨「ゲリラ台風」 Surprising Rain "Guerrilla Typhoon" ends, the timer will start counting again from 59 until 57 and will reset back to 59 when 後光「からかさ驚きフラッシュ」 Halo "Karakasa Surprising Flash" begins.

Please note that the seconds mentioned in this post are the main values seen on screen (for example, when it says “59”, it could be very well “59.99”, but I was not sure if it was indeed 59.99 or 60.00 and due to the frame loss of the video the 60 is not visible). I know it’s not exactly the same thing, but the purpose of this post is to showcase that there is something wrong with the timer. For accurate seconds, you can look into the code yourself.

Timer oddities between some attacks in Subterranean Animism

When Satori's second spellcard ends, a timer showing 49 seconds will start counting. Then, when her third spellcard begins, the timer will reset back to 49 seconds and start counting downwards. Similarly, when her third spellcard ends, the timer will show 69, 68, only to reset back to 69 at the beginning of the fourth spellcard. For illustration purposes, the gifs are from Reimu B route, but this occurs on all 6 routes.

Before Orin's last spellcard, the timer will show 59 seconds only to reset back to 59 when the spellcard actually begins. At a first glance you may think nothing is happening, but you can see in the milliseconds that it is resetting.

Between Utsuho's fourth nonspell and spellcard, there is a timer which counts from 69 downwards for few seconds. When her fourth spellcard begins, it is reset back to 69 seconds.

Please note that the seconds mentioned in this post are the main values seen on screen (for example, when it says “49”, it could be very well “49.99”, but I was not sure if it was indeed 49.99 or 50.00 and due to the frame loss of the video the 50 is not visible). Subterranean Animism glitched out reaaaally bad today. Beware, it has lots of flashes.

In Subterranean Animism if you have Extra stage unlocked with a character type and then you clear Easy with same character type, you will lock back the Extra for it.

For unknown reasons, one bullet from Sanae’s spellcard Esoterica "Nine Syllable Stabs" in Subterranean Animism, is coloured differently than the others.

On the wiki it is mentioned that if you finish a spell in more than 100 seconds in Subterranean Animism, you will get 999.99s at Actual Time.
