HSV Update!

I just realized it’s been a while since I’ve talked about this. STI talk below!

So I contracted it in November (I think) and was diagnosed in December when I had my first out break, which lasted about 2 weeks and a few days and was about a 5-6 at the worst on the pain scale. All in all, tolerable. It’s now June and I haven’t had another outbreak! Nothing.

So a reminder for the newly diagnosed, you never know how it’s going to go. It COULD be chill as hell. I was expecting the worst, like... outbreaks every few weeks or something but it hasn’t been SHIT. It’s awesome, actually.

I’ve been getting nightly rounds of sadness. I was diagnosed a little over a month ago. Is this normal? After like 8, or while I’m winding down for bed, life just starts feeling shitty and I remember I have this virus and I just feel awful. I figure things will get worse before they get better but this feeling sucks.

Hey herpblr! I have a question about meds.

I just had my first outbreak (it’s almost completely healed and it’ll be 2 weeks tomorrow) and my doctor prescribed me acyclovir, but they’re 400 mg tablets and she said to take them 5 times a day for ten days. What the fuck? I weigh 105 pounds. I’m not really looking to overdose (and i’m terrified of medicating, lmao) so... is that a normal dosage? It sounds insane to me. I don’t think that’s safe for me...

This diagnosis won’t stop you from doing anything! You’re going to have a long and fantastic life. You will achieve everything you possibly can. You will still make so many friends and have so many lovers and make so many memories.

A little pain and discomfort are nothing in the scheme of things. You’re gonna have a fantastic life. And what more can you ask for?

So I’m still gonna talk about herpes stuff on here, even though it’s my personal blog. My reasoning is that there should be no reason to separate the two ideas -- my personality and my virus -- and that I should be unafraid/unapologetic in my quest to learn more and connect with people via shared experience. I’ll tag everything with hsv2/herpes/glitterpositive so that people who don’t want to hear it don’t have to.

I have always been an activist and a scholar, so that’s how I’m looking at my new status. There’s a lot here to fight for and a LOT here to discover but we have to do it together. Herpes has been such a secret, hidden condition for so long that we practically have a blank narrative slate to work with. What’s exciting about this is that our stories and our observations will build the framework for  HSV activism and hopefully our dialogue will inspire people to educate themselves further.

So let’s do some good work! Let’s talk. My inbox is always open. Let’s change the stigma together.

oh speaking of...

i was diagnosed with HSV-2 a few days ago. A new adventure begins. I am glitter positive and I am absolutely gonna work to fight the stigma. I still have so many questions.
