Chain Fruit Cholla Cactus - April 2018 The Besh-Ba-Gowah Ruins in Globe, Arizona, are a neat site, with a lot of history. But it is hard to tell what is original ruins and what is reconstruction. To me, it was obviously a fortress intended to protect the Solado peoples from their enemies. The rangers at the site down play that aspect of it. There are some outstanding cacti growing throughout the ruins. This image is a huge Chain Fruit Cactus. You usually don’t see these standing alone. The caretakers at the site must pick up the dropped branches that would normally spread the cactus throughout the area. MWM http://michael-massa-micon.tumblr.com
Lizard on a Rock - April 2018 Besh-Ba-Gowah Ruins - Globe, AZ There are lizards everywhere there is sand or rock in Arizona. Usually they are just a blur out of the corner of your eye as they race from one place of shelter to another. This particular lizard was basking in the sun on a rock at Besh-Ba-Gowah ruins. I don’t know if he thought the birds of prey were not flying in the hot afternoon sun or that perhaps his total lack of motion made him invisible to his enemies. I do know that he did not move at all while I circled the rock and took a variety of different images of him. I tried to find out if the different colored tail meant that he had lost it at some point or possibly he was colored that way naturally, like the Whip Tail Lizard. His tail was no where near long enough to qualify him as a Whip Tail, but the coloring is very similar. MWM http://michael-massa-micon.tumblr.com
Entrance to the Besh-Ba-Gowah Ruins Globe, AZ - April 2018 When the Solado inhabited these ruins, this entryway led into an inner court yard. Today it has been reconstructed as an entrance into the ruins. Before the people abandoned this village / fortress, this would have been a dark and forbidding passage. Now it is a frame for the ruins and the various vegetation growing therein. The second image gives a better view of the ruins themselves. MWM http://michael-massa-micon.tumblr.com
