This limited edition Frederator postcard  was modeled after one of the first “boxing” style R&B posters (below) I was able to get (from eBay), printed by the prolific printer, Globe Posters from Baltimore, Maryland. I thought it was a nice homage and a perfect format to catch people up on some of our more recent cartoon productions.

James Brown Tuscon Sports Center Concert Poster (1967) Extremely Rare. Jumbo window card poster printed in Dayglo yellow and purple on card stock for a show on Sun. Feb. 5. The poster shows announces "...A Show For The Entire Family...The Fabulous James Brown"...The lineup also includes support acts the Famous Flames, The Jewels, James Crawford and Bobby Byrd. Printed by "Globe Poster, Baltimore".

The first anime club on YouTube!

As I was researching Baltimore’s Globe Poster for my homage post, I got inspired to do some of our limited edition postcards in their style. I loved a BB King concert poster because 1)  BB King in 1969 at the Fillmore East was one of the five best shows I’ve ever heard/seen, and 2) I thought the color scheme was subtle and gorgeous.

On the other hand, I’d decided the card would showcase our fast growing Get in the Robot anime channel, and BB’s poster didn’t accommodate the information in the right way, so I zeroed in on the layout from an Association show.

Globe Poster Baltimore 

Like a lot of people my age I got a jones for posters because I fell in love with rock’n’roll, which were still being heavily used to promote dance hall concerts (before concerts went into stadiums).

When I started collecting (the Norfolk Arena one up top is one of my gems) my cursory research kept turning up Globe’s work (I was East Coast based like Globe) in the “boxing” genre, even though today, they’re more known for their R&B and circus fair stuff.

Back in the day, my partner in branding, Alan Goodman, and I started throwing holiday parties for our branding agency, booking acts like Dr. John and Johnny Copeland. In 1989 I asked our art director, Noel Frankel, to design an homage to Globe.

Noel tried, he really did. But his art direction tendency to do things the ‘right’ way intruded and I was a bit disappointed as to how “clean” it turned out. I had no idea that Globe was still in business and they would have done it up the way I’d envisioned.

For all of you, the good news is that like Hatch Show Print in Nashville, Globe has been relocated at a non-profit, the University of Maryland. They’re still making posters! I’ll have to commission one for Frederator, dontcha think?
