Elle, may I ask you and your esteemed literary salon if you have recs for books set in all-female (or mostly female) institutions like boarding school/women's college, ballet academy, convent etc? Toxicity and/or queerness extremely coveted obvs. I've just ordered The Starving Saints but I've had a real itch for more of this lately. Plain Bad Heroines and Learwife are two recs from me if anyone else is looking for this!

omg I LOVE this theme. I'm afraid I don't have many recs without caveats, but I'm seated if anyone wants to jump in! one book (sorry to always be reccing this) is Matrix by Lauren Groff, set in a convent.

others that came to mind (with caveats): Dare Me by Megan Abbott, her cheerleading book — it's set at a regular US public school and Men Are There I guess, but the core of it is the cheerleading team. another also The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker, about five sisters and a family curse; their sheltered upbringing has shades of this, although again, male characters are also there

🍵 + best and worst interpretations of Audrey Horne

I feel like Audrey gets some of the worst of it. There's the reddit dudebro fandom who act like they love her character but only as a cool sex object and when she does something like have an inconvenient emotion or dares to age, she is deemed unfuckable and therefore no longer a character worth liking. Then on here she's the threat to the popular slash ship so it's all 'analysis' that largely consists of condescending sexism wrapped up in progressive language and in general a complete misunderstanding of her relationships with Cooper, Ben and Laura. Very frustrating time to be an Audrey fan right now, but I shall continue to be one.

The first character I first fell in love with: dale bartholomew cooper please interactThe character I never expected to love as much as I do now: all of twin peaks is wild but nadine having that overdose coma and coming out the other side with the mind of a high schooler and super strength is absolutely wild and i absolutely enjoyed every second of her arc in the endThe character everyone else loves that I don’t: do people like bobby because i started skipping his scenes hfshgdsgdhThe character I love that everyone else hates: benjamin horne is utter trash but i earnestly found his scenes in s2 really entertaining--when he was moping and losing his mind that is. The character I used to love but don’t any longer: donna and then she just went backwards in her characterisation and the whole trying to be laura thing made me roll my eyes The character I would totally smooch: hawke is my baby boyThe character I’d want to be like: god let me be like the log lady when i’m an old woman. The character I’d slap: donna purely because of the knowledge that her actress stopped cooper/audrey from happening. @ladycomstock and i coined “the donnaverse” which is the current canon of twin peaks s2 and it’s not canon to us.A pairing that I love: cooprey all day any day, also quite partial to cooper x laura thanks to the little fandom on tumblr omg. and i know this was basically david lynch’s fanfic of him x madchen amick but: gordon and shelly were legit so cute i loved their interactions ahh. krist also made me think about donna x laura and it makes my heart hurt 3A pairing that I despise: cooper x annie, ew for the forced romance & blandness of it. i also fastforwarded everything that was donna x james or laura x james and just james in general. i’m honestly not mad about cooper x diane, however, it could have been handled so much better than that extremely uncomfortable motel scene which i had to watch through my fingers.

I'm late to the book hate party but I have to warn you all that Slashed Beauties is so bad. It's advertised as women's wrongs horror about eighteenth-century Anatomical Venus waxworks coming to life to kill abusive men but actually the protagonist is a sweet innocent babygirl who just wants to be really niceys and not hurt anyone :((((( but she's taken in by an eeeeeeevil brothel madam :((((( and then the evil madam sells her to some eeeeeeeeeevil witches to turn into a murder doll who kills skeevy medical students against her will :((((( when really she doesn't think any of these men deserve to die :((((( and actually when you think about it, aren't the brothel madam and the witches far worse than any of the men who abuse women throughout the novel. Also, the attempts at historical prose are clunky and terrible and the book goes so far out of its way to make sure that we know the brothel madam antagonist is the most evil person ever that there's a line in there about how if she were around today, she'd be a far-right politician or running the Hunger Games. Just in case we didn't get it.

This is a delightful description. I think the brothel madam should have killed and eaten each of those men

Mrs Dancers/Rebecca!

Into it! I love that Mrs Danvers (at least the film version) is an evil predatory lesbian however Rebecca was clearly the one in charge and I love that Mrs Danvers spent all her time haunting Manderley like some evil shadow bringing up Rebecca whenever she could. I hope Maxim had to hear them fucking on a regular basis.
