DAY 3: THE TOM FORD SHARKSKIN SUIT as seen in Skyfall (2012).
While Pierce Brosnanâs era of Bond became synonymous â not uncontroversially â with Italian menswear house, Brioni, Daniel Craigâs would become known for its sharp, narrow-shouldered, tight-fitting Tom Ford suits. The sartorial change was triggered by a âtailoring warâ between Brioni and Eon Productions over product placement rights, which came to a head during Quantum of Solace. And so, as of 2008, Bondâs menswear provider was finally English again.Â
But it was in Skyfall, under the costume direction of Jany Temime, when the Tom Ford suits really arrived as Craigâs hallmark look. This was largely due to their tailoring. Often criticised by eagle-eyed fashion experts for being too tight, the new silhouette was a direct answer to worries Bond filmmakers had over Brioniâs suits being too relaxed for the new era. For more than one reason, their tightness was the point. Partly, it was a nod to the popularity of a slim fit in the mainstream. Chiefly, however, it was a character-driven decision. This was a more physical James Bond, one with a bulkier physique than his predecessors who had to move more â run more, shoot more, grapple and kill more â on the job. Daniel Craig, doubtless proud of both his stunt work and his physique, wanted Bondâs clothing to reflect the character. Temime remarked to GQ: "Daniel wanted a suit you could forget â a suit that wasn't on top of his body, but moving with his body. Also, he must've been extremely proud of his body, as you can imagine. If I had such a body, I would like to show it."
Given the tightness of their tailoring and the brutality with which the suits were treated in action scenes, copies had to be made. Tom Ford made twenty identical suits for the opening scene of Skyfall alone. Christieâs last sold one for ÂŁ44,100. Not bad for a suit that was never meant to survive the shoot.Â
