A sheer chance: I rented a car as I left the airport. A few hundred yards into the road I stumbled upon a beautiful, well preserved Gloster Meteor F-8 of the FAB (Força Aerea Brasileira). Purchased in the early 50s, the marvelous but slightly obsolete Meteors were a cheaper choice to the USAF's Republic F-84 Thunderjets and the North American F-86 Sabres. Around 70 jets were bought, along with spares and training. The total cost was four million pounds sterling, paid in about 15 thousand tons of cotton to a desperately raw materials destitute Britain. Few surviving airframes are displayed near airports and air bases (my source is Rudnei Dias da Cunha's "History of the Brazilian Air Force"). #brazil #salvadordebahia #aeroportoluizeduardomagalhães #forcaaereabrasileira #fab #glostermeteor #jetfighter #aircraft #aviation (at Salvador, Bahia, Brazil)
