Monsanto’s product Roundup is back in the news again and is being linked to new concerns over it’s ties to cancer.

Thirty years ago, an Environmental Protection Agency committee determined that the popular weed killer Roundup might cause cancer. Six years later, in 1991, the agency reversed itself after re-evaluating the mouse study that had been the basis for the original conclusion.

Now the issue is back again, in an even bigger way. An agency of the World Health Organization has declared that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, “probably” causes cancer in people. One piece of evidence the agency cites is that same mouse study.

The declaration drew an angry response from Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, which has accused the agency of having an “agenda” and “cherry picking” the data to support its case.

The conclusion is “starkly at odds with every credible scientific body [mirthless chuckle] that has examined glyphosate safety,” Philip Miller, Monsanto’s vice president for global regulatory affairs, told reporters on Tuesday. That includes a recent review by German government regulators on behalf of the European Union.

Officials at the agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, said they had no agenda other than to inform the World Health Organization. They said the conclusion was based on studies of people, laboratory animals and cells.

“All three lines of evidence sort of said the same thing, which is we ought to be concerned about this,” said Aaron Blair, a retired epidemiologist from the National Cancer Institute who was chairman of the group of 17 reviewers from around the world; agreement on the classification was unanimous.

You may want to go organic after reading this scientific paper.

Most people implicitly assume that the pesticides, fungicides and herbicides agribusiness uses must be more or less safe for human health.  Well, you may want to think again.

Many of these chemicals (referred to as “principles” in the article below) use additives to extend the principle’s potency and help them penetrate cell walls.  It turns out this can make some of them up to 1000x more toxic.

Luckily for the manufacturers of these chemicals, they aren’t required to disclose these additives or have them tested for toxic effects in combination with the main ingredient.

No surprise, Monsanto’s Roundup, whose main ingredient is glycophosphate, “was found in this experiment to be 125 times more toxic than glyphosate” alone.  “Moreover, despite its reputation, Roundup was by far the most toxic among the herbicides and insecticides tested. This inconsistency between scientific fact and industrial claim may be attributed to huge economic interests, which have been found to falsify health risk assessments and delay health policy decisions.”

For profit.  For Wall Street shareholders.  For the enrichment of corporate executives.  Monsanto and other companies are making throne rooms full of cash, using you and I as guinea pigs for their chemical experiments.  The upshot here of course is that the combined toxic loads of all these different chemicals is unknown and is theoretically if not actually damaging the health of large numbers of people.  And these companies aren’t particularly concerned about that as long as the money keeps on flowing.

“Our results challenge the relevance of the acceptable daily intake for pesticides because this norm is calculated from the toxicity of the active principle alone. Chronic tests on pesticides may not reflect relevant environmental exposures if only one ingredient of these mixtures is tested alone.”

What does that mean?  If you value your health, refuse to buy non-organic food.  It’s the wild west out there and the corporate black hats want to keep it that way.  They really don’t give a shit.  It’s profits before people.  It’s capitalism.
