{MUSIC AND LYRICS: THE BASICS OF COMPOSITION}

Jung Byunghee stood at the front of the class and clapped his hands together enthusiastically, in front of him sat his class in rows looking up at him. He hadn't been nervous at all, his composition skills were better than most and it was very likely that he would be able to help his students achieve their basic skills. He had hoped that he would be able to show his class the more calm side of himself but if necessary he was willing to raise his voice at any student who was not reaching the expected levels that he would set for them. "Welcome to The Basics of Composition," he smiled "I'm Professor Jung and expect you, all, to work very hard this year." Byunghee made it very certain that he expected a lot from everyone, emphasising the fact that he meant every single person in the class. "Instead of sitting around a doing this getting to know each other crap, we're gonna get started on the work straight away," He walked to the board at the very front of the classroom and wrote 'Chord Progression' before turning round and facing the class. "How many of you have attempted to write a song before?" He paused, waiting for the responses of the class and was met with the replies he had guessed, continuing he asked "So, how many of you have written songs where you have looked in detail about its chord progression?" Once again he paused and awaited the answers. "For those of you who have not, yet, looked in detail about this we will start right now," he leant against the board and began to explain the basics of the topic to the class "Chords provide the basic building blocks for any piece of music, right? If they're grouped together they can create different dynamic functions, some chords providing the stability of the harmony and others to make it more dynamic." He hoped that the class were paying attention, every now and then he would make a quick scan of the room, he tried to keep them interested and interacting but whilst explaining the subject it was not the easiest of things, even for him to do. "Can anybody tell me what is used, in sheet music, to indicate the chords in a progression?"
