May you be forgiven.
Did God burn down Aziraphale’s bookshop?
Okay stay with me here. This is pure speculation, but hey that’s what I do. But watching this scene again - Aziraphale’s exchange with Metatron, Shadwell ‘exorcising’ him, and his return to Heaven - I can’t help but think a couple things: 1) That candle felt awkward to me on rewatch. Yes, the plausibility is there. The shop shakes as Shadwell slams the door. The candle topples. But it just felt like an exaggeration. Like a microcosm of chaos theory. Like... divine intervention? 2) Why are we burning the Sound of Music? Why, specifically, the programme for the musical God is said to like? A musical about - among other things - love, a family, a free-spirited woman stifled by the rigid doctrine of convent life, a miraculous escape. That is sitting on another programme with crows on it. Also, the irony in having the Angels quote the Sound of Music like scripture. 3) What does fire mean in this show? What does fire mean in this show? 4) If God is burning the bookshop.... why is She burning the bookshop? I reckon it’s got to do with the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter: Think of the power in a book like that. Does God want Her guidebook to the Apocalypse in a stranger’s hands, now neither Aziraphale nor Anathema are around to safeguard it? Unless the fire actually serves to motivate Crowley in some way? Test him? 5) “Very imaginative.” Aziraphale called Metatron and God’s plan imaginative. Angels aren’t supposed to be imaginative. Why would God be imaginative? That’s what She cast Crowley down for. Unless She placed him exactly where She wanted him to be.
You could miracle it away
