Designs of Godzilla in Scott Ciencin’s Godzilla Book series

For fun I decided to track the changes in design for Godzilla in the Scott Ciencin books, with Bob Eggleton’s art. They actually do seem to fit the stories...

First book has no interior art that I can recall. Design most resembles Godzilla Raids Again suit, GyakushuGoji

Godzilla Invades America

Heisei Godzilla inspired of some kind, but I can’t pinpoint further.

Journey to Monster Island 

For the cover: Either Mosugoji (Mothra vs Godzilla) or SanDaikaijuGoji (Ghidrah the Three Headed monster) given the claws. Both were technically the same suit, but with a different head.

Interior art is more clearly the head from Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster ( context: Godzilla has to lay down the law when some of the monsters under his leadership start acting strange, a heavy-handed foreshadowing of the mind control plot.)

Godzilla Vs the Space Monster

Kinggoji from King Kong vs Godzilla. 

This one is a bit jarring considering Godzilla’s character development: to see him go back to a design where he was in an antagonist role. I wonder if Eggleton decided since they already used the suit used against Ghidrah from the last one, he just chose whatever suit design he wanted. (Or by mistake assumed that suit was used in Ghidrah as by then the monster was known by the name King Ghidorah.)

Its one of the most beloved designs so I ain’t complaining.

64 Years of Godzilla

Godzilla has been my favorite franchise of all time. Seeing the franchise evolve into what it is now is truly marvelous. I got to see the ups and downs with these films. But I mainly got to see the purpose of each film. Each film has a charm and some form of value around them. And that, to me at least, is the reason why I keep coming back to these movies. Each film is memorable, each film is intriguing, and at least every single Godzilla film is somebody's favorite.
