I wonder if Jane's first dream, the death of Jake, should be read as a complement to the dreams of decapitation and... what's the word for eye removal. Enucleation?? Badass.

I guess in the sense that the cherubim are two views attached to the same head, they could be represented by the two eyes attached to one head? (Perhaps relevant that newborn cherubs have heterochromia) Such that the removal of an eye (or the blackening of Skaia) becomes synonymous with the removal of your headmate. If Roxy and Dirk form a cherubic pairing, the same could apply to Jake and Jane... in which case his dream-death is the same as the enucleation represented by Jack blotting out the sun...

On the other had, Jane's dream of enucleation (sorry I am having fun repeating the word) is followed by Roxy losing a fenestrated panel -- more eye-loss imagery, the windows have been associated with the Gaze since Problem Sleuth. That the enucleation could represent the excision of a soul (...which is what Dirkbot was doing prior to Jane's latest dream) lines up with my previous reading that Meenah was split off from Roxy's soul, like GCat ripped one of her eyes out -- yet it remains strange that the "eye" be deposited in front of Dirk, who ought to /be/ that eye under the cherubic paradigm. (That the stolen window is deposited beside the bisected horse reaffirms the link between decapitation and enucleation?)

(There was a brief mention of Roxy's void-out powers prior to the window-snatch -- should the ability to hide things from the reader be construed as the theft of the reader's eye?)
