#tbt almost exactly a year ago. This is the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. My father in law was gravely ill and not expected to survive, but he surprised us all and did just that. He told us later he didn’t remember much of us being there at all, which wasn’t surprising given how sick he was. But it was the last time we saw him. He’s had COPD for years, but died rather suddenly on July 1. It’s hit me very hard, losing this solitary curmudgeon who was the only father I’ve ever had with whom I felt perfectly and utterly unthreatened, and that was enormously significant to me. He was in my life for more than twenty years, and I miss him. We are #goinbacktocali next week for his funeral.
