There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Gettin Political. And Religlical.
The following is the text of a campaign ad that GOP candidate Rick Perry released yesterday in hopes of gaining points in the Iowa caucus, a generally socially conservative constituency:
I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian, but you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school. As President, I'll end Obama's war on religion. And I'll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage. Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again. I'm Rick Perry and I approve this message.
I'm Steve Ciccarelli, and I don't approve that fucking message.
A) The "War on Christmas" is not real. B) Even if it was--even if Obama literally came out and said he was going to send Santa to Gitmo-- it has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not openly gay people should serve or not. And something just gets under my skin with the way he says "gays" in the video, with a certain amount of hate behind his Bush II cheshire grin. "There's something wrong." Fuck you.
At first, I couldn't tell whether it was a joke or not. "Maybe he just doesn't know he's being filmed?" But no, he knows exactly what he's doing. So much so that he looks into a camera and says he approves the message.
Look, I was raised Catholic and have no feelings about any other faith (besides a slight interest in Buddhism, but my grandmother would have a heart attack and say hail marys until she fell over if I ever expressed that at Christmas dinner), but in Tebow Nation, Rick Perry thinks shoving his bible down your throat will gain him some votes. And, sadly, he might be right.
I don't remember religion being this much a part of politics when I was younger, but in the post-9/11/post-Fox News/hell, post-objectivity world we're all sort of trying to trudge through today, it's at the forefront. People hold on to their guns and their bibles, and the past few years have proven that accurate.
I'm a liberal kid from the East Coast. I grew up on Clash records. I read books. I trust science. I believe that everybody's free to believe in what they want. I believe pot should be legal and tobacco should be sold in dimebags in 7-11 parking lots instead. I believe that I belong to a different church, the collectively sane. I believe in the powers of LSD, thanks to Steve Jobs and Carlos Santana. I believe that rock and roll can save your soul. I believe that our government can be good, at it's best; horrifying at it's worst.
But in 2011, to condemn servicepeople for loving who they love should be a crime.
Obama has had no War on Religion, it's been a War for Sensibility. A War to Restore Sanity.
Jon Stewart said that if everything was amplified that we'd hear nothing. But they keep inventing new speakers, like they invent stories out of sound bites for ads, like Rick Perry invents his new persona for his last-ditch effort at some sort at credibility. The Republican field so far has been one trainwreck after another after another (although I am interested in Huntsman moreso lately, just as a person). Herman Cain gave none of the fucks, until it came out that he gave a lot of them over a long time. Bachmann, well she's Bachmann; a shooting star that thankfully imploded before reaching it's apex.
I voted for Obama. I campaigned for Obama in college. I was a believer. I think thanks to the idiocy of the other side, we're finally going to get all that change he talked about. Second terms are always go time. I hope he finally delivers the delicious CHANGE pizza he promised four years ago. I'm hungry and I hope he brought some garlic knots.
Faith didn't make America strong, people made America strong. People with faith in things such as Jesus, Allah, Buddha, The Flying Spaghetti Monster, and even for a brief period in my home town, a loose collective known as the Church of Keith Richards--also known as a smart punk who wanted tax-free whiskey and Marlboro Reds. The faith, in politics, used to be secondary. The question wasn't if they went to church on Sunday, it was if they could get shit done.
Guilty pleasure of the day: Mirror Man by the Human League.
Make it a great day, and remember: "You know I'll change, if change is what you require...."
