Though she’d only spent a few hours on campus, Niamh felt like she’d had a crushingly long day. Her threshold for social interaction since leaving rehab had been low, much lower than it had been while there. The world was too wide for her - there were so many people. There was so much space. As she stepped on to the elevator in her building, she pressed herself back into the corner, hands on the strap of the bag slung across her chest. She’d pressed the button for her floor, and kept her eyes focused on the ground as she waited for the doors to close. The elevator was blessedly unoccupied, and she took a deep breath, enjoying the small space with no company to make her anxious.

the other elevator doors

the other elevator doors. you know the ones. you walk into an elevator and there's a door on the opposite side. you have tried all the floors, pressed all of the buttons, but only the door you entered through opens. that other door never does. to where might these doors lead? what purpose do they serve? most will tell you, and most will assume, that they are for maintenance workers, housekeeping, or the like. depending on where you are, they may say the door leads to secure areas of the building - high-clearance access only. most of the time, they are right. most of the time. sometimes, they are just passing along the information that was passed to them. they don't know any better - what they have been told makes perfect sense. sometimes. be wary of the other elevator doors. one may open for you.
