Send me “I miss you” to know what my muse will say after 1 year, 5 years, then to 10 years after your muse’s death.
“Hey, Diana.” He whispered, kneeling down in front of the grave. “Uh-” He started, feeling his voice catch in his throat. He’d never been good at this, visiting headstones and paying respects to the dead. With his parents, he only went with someone, because he’d be too much of a mess to get home. Now, he’d just gone, without telling anyone. “I miss you so much, Diana. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I still blame myself. Iris has to wake me up from nightmares sometimes.” He started again, shaking his head. It didn’t feel right. “You were gone too soon. Please come back to me.” He closed his eyes, blinking away tears. He stood and walked away, sighing.
“I brought you flowers. I wasn’t sure what kind you liked, that never came up in our conversations. But I got forget-me-nots. I figured it was as good of a message as any.” This had started to become a tradition. Coming to Diana’s grave on they day he’d lost her. But usually he just talked, flowers was something new. “Iris and I got married. I know you used to tease us about that, that we were already practically a married couple. But now we are. I hope you’re happy for us.” He closed his eyes, taking a shaky breath. “I still see you everywhere. I see your smile when I tell a joke I know you’d love. I see your smirk when I’m about to take down an enemy, and I hear your corny phrases you’d say when I have my foot on their chest. Oh, I forgot to tell you. Cisco set up a permanent mannequin for your suit. It’s a memorial to you.” He laughed softly, shaking his head. “It makes me miss you even more.”
For the first time, Barry had a small smile on his face. This place usually meant darkness for him. But now it was a way for him to remember the person he’d loved. “Hey D. Iris and I had our second kid this year. I asked her if we could name her Diana, after you. She said yes.” He sat down in front of the grave, tracing his fingers over the fancy carved script that said Diana. “Now I’ve got a small bundle of joy to remind me of you every day. I hope you don’t mind that. It’s a way for you to come back to me, to us, to everyone.” He wiped away a stray tear, even though he was still smiling. He was okay for once. “Thank you for everything, Diana. You were one of the strongest women I knew. And you were a better hero than I ever was. You inspired me. I’ll never forget that, I promise.”
