Golden Red Amaranth laid out to dry on a row that I'm solarizing. The weather looks hot and dry for the next couple days so I'm going to risk having it exposed like this. The seed came from my friend Miguel, who grew Golden Amaranth on one side of his house (in Taos), and Hopi Red on the other, and this cross happened. It's very beautiful, especially in its prime! Golden Amaranth was gathered in 1978 in a door-yard garden near Rinconada, New Mexico by Native Seeds/SEARCH and I received seed from Miguel Santisteven (my friend Margarita Garcia's husband) when I was visiting them in Toas a few years back. We wanted to see how it would adapt to Philly. It is gorgeous and produces edible golden seeds. It is also a great distraction for cucumber beetles, and along with these fourteen-foot tall Transylvanian sunflowers from @erc.bdz, it makes a beautiful backdrop to the seed garden. #goldenamaranth #amaranthushypochondriacus #nativeseedsearch #transylvaniangiantsunflower (at Delaware County, Pennsylvania)
