Brave girl #Repost @wannabe_entomologist ・・・ Please read caption before commenting: First of all, I have to preface this post with the obligatory DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME. Secondly, this spider is venomous, as are all spiders aside from two small families. But, it’s venom is not medically significant. Meaning, if you were to be bitten, you wouldn’t even go to the hospital. (I’ve been bitten once by what I thought what a dead huntsman and as I went to move it off of some laundry it bit me.) I had what I call the Huntsman Hangover for about two hours, but I reckon that was more of an adrenaline hangover. Thirdly, these spiders are known to be docile. I’ve lost count now how many I’ve held and have seen exactly ONE ever rear up into a defensive posture. Now the important part-my daughter is probably more skilled and knowledgeable about spiders than a lot of people. I was going to get a video with my smallest Golden Huntsman and my largest (Hawn, the one in the video) together somehow. As I took Hawn out of her enclosure she, as usual, easily walked right onto my hand and settled in. I mentioned this to my daughter Sarah about what an amazingly cool spider she was, and just so chill. Then she said, “Can I hold her?” I’ve let my kids hold Golden orbs (Nephila) because of the same reasons, but they’re clumsy and awkward, therefore making them easier for an amateur to hold. Huntsman, when they decide to be, are lightening fast. Making it difficult for an amateur to hold unless they’re a. ready and b. not afraid of maybe being bitten. So, I warned Sarah of the possibilities, and told her that unlike the Golden orb, don’t do the hand over hand thing, and to just let her sit on her. So, her stiffness that you see in the video isn’t fear, it’s her holding still like I had instructed.
