More Economic Projections Released Relating to Proposed Immigration Reform Legislation
Yesterday, another piece of research was released relating to this bill, and it dealt with the potential impact on the economy such a reform would have in several different ways.
As we've been stating since this issue began to dominate the news, the immigration reform effort that the legislature is taking on is going to involve many different twists, turns and unexpected developments as it winds its way towards a conclusion. One of the predicted elements of this process involves studies that will deal with the potential economic impact that the immigration reform bill would have on the country. We recently discussed a Heritage Foundation study that predicted trillions of dollars in spending that was widely criticized by both sides of the political aisle.
Yesterday, another piece of research was released relating to this bill, and it dealt with the potential impact on the economy such a reform would have in several different ways. The Social Security Administration was asked to analyze the potential effects of the bill on that program, on the potential for new jobs and on the GDP. That analysis has been completed, and it contains mostly good news for people who want to see immigration reform pass through the legislature and become the new law of the land.
Specifically, the Social Security Administration stated that if the current immigration reform bill becomes law, it would create a net of more than 3.2 million new jobs across the United States during the next decade. This new system would also boost the gross domestic product, or GDP, of the United States by an estimated 1.63 percentage points over the next 10 years. Ultimately, these developments would help bring a degree of stability to the Social Security Trust Fund, which has been the target of its own political gaming for at least the past 20 years.
Proponents of the immigration bill hailed this analysis as a sign that getting this reform effort done would not only bring about a uniform set of standards for immigrants currently living in the United States, but that it would also provide a necessary boost to the economy. That side of the issue is likely to continue to voice this opinion with these sets of projections as the lobbying becomes more intense and the process advances.
Opponents of the current form of the immigration bill criticized the analysis as flawed in several ways, and most of that criticism involved the supposed assumptions that were made in coming to these numerical conclusions. Much like those pushing for this bill, opponents are likely to continue to look for holes in this analysis in order to minimize the impact it will have on the debate that is going to continue for several weeks.
There have now been two studies released this week regarding the financial impact of immigration reform. There will no doubt be more released soon.
