"I'm done. I had to do it." Did he have to attack Konoha? No. But he was a man who couldn't live without the war to fight, and Minato's morals were already questionable. Perhaps this was inevitable. "You can still leave, but I'm not finished. Konoha is just the start."

Leave?

Abandon is what he means.

With a mouth full of ashes there is no room for words. In the wake of such tragedy, there is no place for them. 

Corpses of comrades and civilians alike are strewn before him, some bodies beyond recognition and others stare at him in blame. How could he let this happen?  

The Hero of War, The Hokage allowed this despair to befall them. Allowed danger and death to roam their streets and do as he pleased. All due to his selfish desire. His father warned and threatened, but his hope…no. His desperate need to connect with him blinded him. Tuned out the promise of violence and war in favor of believing he could keep him tamed. 

Now he stands among the ruin of his choice. 

He failed to protect them. He failed as a hero and as a leader.

His consequence stares back at him in charred bodies, dead bodies of those he called friends and family. His punishment is what he fought to leave so long ago. What he dedicated his entire life to never feel again. He’s alone again.    

To rise up from such a failure, is there such a thing? His old words haunt him now, mock him. Never give up and to always get back up. In the face of such loss and failure, how can one even conceive to get back on their feet. To continue with life when death is all you will carry, when the lives of those who depended on you weigh on your mind, body, and soul. 

The weight of one life is enough to break one man. Just how can one handle the weight of hundreds? 

Naruto tears his gaze away. Unlike the destroyed homes and buildings, these lives will forever remain broken. His crying eyes meet the troubled ones of his father.

As soon as their eyes meet the desperate yearning that brought him here returns. He’s sick by his fucking need to reach out to his father and soothe that ache inside him. That stupid little pain of being alone. 

And the only words that leave his lips, in the wake of this awful catastrophe, fill him with a fresh wave hatred for himself. 

God fucking damn it. 

“…why wasn’t I enough dad?”

To stop this?

To keep you close?

I don’t want to be alone.

     his head rests against minato’s shoulder as he takes in the body heat coming off the man beside him, eyes fluttered shut as he sighed through his nose. it’s been a long time, with much for both of them to do. madara is aching for a nap, perhaps, or a hot bath to work the knots from his body.

     the question makes him grunt, his shoulders shaking in a little murmur of acknowledgement before he picks his head up to peer at minato with a tired expression reflected in onyx eyes.

          “ would you believe me if i said i didn’t miss it? ” he drops his head back to minato’s shoulder, leans upon him once more as he keeps talking. “ that era stole my entire family from me before i was twenty-five. i don’t have many fond memories of it. even if we’re in hiding in this time, i like it better. ”

     i am something like content, he means to say, but the words get lost in how he rests against the blond.

"Kakashi! Look!" Minato is holding a headband with bunny ears, "I found this in a store today!"

kakashi looks, and immediately regrets it. Minato-sensei is probably going to try to get him to wear it. kakashi has done a lot of things in his life, but surely nothing he’s done has karma serving him this? 

“you should wear it,” kakashi tries, “it suits you.” since Minato-sensei is fast, and all. nope, sensei is coming this way, grinning even wider, and kakashi Knows. he Knows. nothing can stop the inevitable... nothing will stop Minato-sensei from putting the bunny-ears headband on kakashi’s head. 

kakashi can’t deny him this small joy, no matter how kakashi suffers for it. if nothing else, at least it’s white so the ears match his hair.

    “Today’s my off day. I decided that at least twenty minutes ago. You’re uh, probably the last to know.”

     “Well?” he leaned against the ex-hokage’s doorframe in his shiny human form, a cheshire grin painting his lips wide. “C’mon. A bit of it is inspiration from you. What do you think? I’ll even wear a hitai-ate to show my undying support for your village.”
