Plant of the Day
Thursday 14 August 2025
This front garden on the island of Sandy, Orkney, was brimming with colour including the hardy annual or biennial Calendula officinalis (common marigold, goldins, Jack-on-horseback, Mary's gold, pot marigold, Scotch marigold, souvenir, yellow goldes, goldings). This fasting growing plant, grown from seed, has aromatic leaves and flowers of vivid orange, borne in a long succession through the summer and autumn until the frost arrives.
