The fast growing annual or biennial Calendula officinalis (pot marigold, goldins, Jack-on-horseback, Mary's gold, ruddles, Scotch marigold, souvenir, goldes, golds, marybuds) has aromatic leaves and heads of vivid orange or yellow flowers. This tough plant provides a long succession of blooms from summer until the first hard frosts. The petals can be used to add color and a slightly peppery or tangy flavour to salads. Deadheading the old flowers will prolong flowering.

realizing i havent drawn otto and posted them here at all in a while... that has to change. theyre not exactly a lovecore valentines day type but i am in the mood already so thats what they get LOL

Collecting pansies from my garden to give to friends; picking the flowers on occasion helps the plant to produce even more flowers. Especially when you remove the older flowers, you prevent the flower from going to seed (and producing seed/reproduction is the goal of the plant) so it will stay alive longer in order to create more flowers/potential seeds. This method is called “deadheading”

Disclaimer: please don’t apply this rule to all plants, especially slow-growing or native plants. Annual plants like pansies respond well to this method but do your research for other plants, especially ones growing in public areas for ethical foraging practices. For some plants, going to seed can be beneficial for birds so this is definitely a case by case basis
