#Repost from my Totally Awesome Vegan Conservationist friends at @oneprotest @download.ins --- In the wake of the FWC approval for a limited harvest on goliath grouper, one angler was arrested for illegally possessing one. In Islamorada, the inspection of a man's cooler uncovered the findings of a live goliath grouper. Thankfully, the fish was released back into the ocean, and the man was arrested. In Florida waters, harvesting a goliath grouper can result in a fine of up to $500 per fish and up to 60 days in jail. It is unknown how long the man was detained and what charges were filed. While this man was caught, an unknown number of people could be out there illegally taking them under the radar. Mix that with the extremity and lingering effects of this year's red tide that resulted in a catastrophic massacre on our marine life, it is clear that now is NOT the appropriate time to open a harvest, limited or not, on the Florida goliath grouper. This harvest is not backed by science, no evidence supports this decision, and many scientists have voiced their opposition and fear for a limited harvest. Please take action and help save this gentle giant! The goliath grouper, also known as a jewfish, is found in the Florida Keys. They have been known to weigh as much as 800 pounds yet still live shallow waters near the coral reef and often under a dock. Their primary diet is crustaceans but they will eat just about any slow moving fish. Anglers avidly pursue the #goliathgrouper but they are very protected and are a catch and release only fish.
