“At dusk I was startled to see this magnificent monolith with its legs pointing to the roar of the sea. My daughter and I got out of the car. It’s right front paw curved inwards and the left stretched out a fan of dark claws in resistance. Blood still quietly pooled in his nose free of flies. He had not been lying there long. No scent of decay resisted us. The flattened grasses below his fur barely held any musk of its parting and we watched the solid lifeless form let its fur be moved by the wind.
