ANYA OLENOV attending sneaking into the 19th birthday celebrations of Miss Bunny Golightly
Living in constant fear for her life for two years has, surprisingly, had one very interesting and welcome benefit. It has given her a chance to get to know Tatiana Valentina, and become something rather like friends with the mafia princess. She never forgets her place, but at least around Tatia, she can be more like herself—a living, breathing person with thoughts and feelings, as opposed to a quiet, obedient cleaning machine. Ever since Tatia was returned home from the Irish, it has been hard to make the bouncy blonde smile like her old self. But one thing seems to have put a little spark back in her eye: the prospect of sneaking out to Bunny Golightly’s birthday bash. Apparently, this is something Tatia and Emmaline have been plotting and somehow, Anya has been roped into it. She’s... well, nervous, as always, but also a little excited. She’s going to a real party for the first time in years, and Tatia has let her raid her closet to find something to wear. It’s like something out of a fairy tale. She just hopes they don’t get caught. Tatia and Emmaline will probably be alright, but Anya dreads to think what might happen if someone from the Bratva recognizes her...
“Oddest? Oh Bozhe moy, very difficult to choose! All e-encounters are being odd in America. Ehhh, maybe is statue-man that moved on the way home from shopping. That was ochen’ stranno. I was being so surprised, I nearly dropped all shopping bags! But was very friendly statue-man, very funny! No speaking, only moving like marionetka.”

SUMMARY
Born and raised in Moscow just after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Her mother Katya was a divorcée with one son from her previous marriage, Yuri. Her father Nikolai was a vor (made man) with a local branch of the Russian Bratva. Though he was not supposed to get married or have children per the Bratva’s rules, he did both in secret, marrying Katya, adopting Yuri as his own, and fathering 5 children. Anya was their second child together.
Though they struggled for money for years, Anya’s family was a loving and happy one. As a middle child and eldest girl, she stuck by her mother much of the time, helping take care of her siblings and developing a love of cooking and baking from watching her mother. She savored family meals where her father was present—despite the fact that he had to keep his family a secret from the Bratva, Nikolai was devoted to them and spent as much time with them as he could. He wanted to make sure none of his children had to make the same hard choices or take the same risks that he had. He wanted better lives for them all, and his children and wife loved him for it.
Eventually, Nikolai was elevated to the rank of Brigadier within the Bratva and was given his own crew to run, having earned his Pakhan’s trust with his loyalty and dedication. This improved the Olenov family’s finances greatly as he got larger cuts of heists and trafficking jobs. Anya was able to focus on school until she was ready for university.
Just before she was meant to leave for university, Nikolai was killed in an accident and the family was left deeply shaken. Yuri was already practicing law and started using most of his income to provide for them, but Katya was deeply affected by the loss of her husband and became inconsolable. Anya put off going to school so that she could stay and take care of her mother and younger siblings, at least until they were off to university themselves. During this time, Anya rekindled her love of baking and her treats became popular in her neighborhood. Her mother encouraged her to start thinking about going to culinary school, and she was looking forward to it as a long-term goal.
All the while, Anya’s other older brother Sergei had decided he wanted to play gangster, and used his father’s name to get an in with the Bratva. Despite his desire to become a full member of the Bratva, Sergei was a very greedy little bitch who skimmed a ton of money off the top of jobs he did. To the tune of about 4 million dollars, according to the Obshchak when they tracked down where the money was disappearing to. Even though he’d been contributing a bit to his family’s struggles, Sergei kept most of that 4 million for himself and blew it on drugs and drink. Needless to say, the Pakhan was not happy about being robbed, and gave him a choice: either pay back all the money within a week, or the Bratva would start killing his family before finally killing Sergei himself.
In addition to being a greedy bitch, Sergei was also a selfish bitch. He ran home and cried to his family, hoping they would magically solve his problems while knowing full well that at least one person in his family would do anything to help him: Anya. And sure enough, he fooled her kind heart with his crocodile tears. Despite her timidity, she summoned up enough courage to go to the Pakhan himself and offer herself to help Sergei. Whatever Bratva wanted to do with her, they could do it and she would take it, if it would help.
The Pakhan made a deal: Anya would now belong to the Bratva completely, and so long as they owned her, Sergei could have as much time as he needed to pay them back. Once he did, Anya would be free to go back to her old life. If Sergei didn’t pay them back, Anya would be on the hook for the 4 million and would pay it off in labor, staying indentured to them. If she tried to escape, she and Sergei would both die. And she would be sent to New York to serve the Bratva there, so that none of her family could try and rescue her or help her.
Anya agreed at once, and was flown out to New York the same day. She’s been serving Viktor Valentina and his family for a couple years, cooking, cleaning, running errands, and so forth. She has lived in fear that entire time, knowing that the Bratva in New York is just as frightening as the one back home, and that her life hangs by a thread daily. If Sergei doesn’t manage to get the 4 million, she’ll be stuck here forever. Her only hope is keeping her head down, doing as she’s told, and praying that she will make it home alive.
And there you have it, my sweet tiny bab who deserves better. Hmu for plots and such <3
“Oh, that is difficult! I… o, kogo mne vybrat’? I pick, umm… I pick gospodin Valentina, Mister Viktor! He is being very kind and generous about brother Sergei’s debts, and I am happy to be helping him.”
I consider these to be snacking brownies, rather than full-on dessert brownies. They’re vegan, gluten-free, flourless, and pretty lightly sweetened. They depend on steamed sweet potato for much of their fudgyness and even some of their sweetness. In other words, they’re pretty virtuous as far as brownies go. But not too annoyingly so, since…
