The restaurant, El Meson D Los Laureanos in the small town of El Quelite, was a stunning step into a colorful culture so unlike my own. Chickens, ducks and roosters at my feet; a cat ran along an open wall; a fellow rode a horse into the courtyard right next to my table, and the horse danced for us. Men in native costume danced; another performed tricks with his lariat—all while we ate food of all sorts, from small quail to pork, beef, and fish wrapped in delicious tortillas. This was truly one of the most lovely and unique restaurant experiences I have ever had.
