That had been a joke, but Nandor wasn't laughing, in fact, he had found the whole thing offensive (as he often did). "These are not fake fangs, ok? and they're not even fangs, they're just regular human teeth... a little bit long looking perhaps, but regular. Very good for eating."

mercy didn’t want to explain the funny out of a joke to anyone. it was kind of a real drag, if she were to be perfectly honest. but she supposed that, just this once, she’d be do it. and no, it had nothing to do with just how genuinely and earnestly this guy was looking at her because she was a hardened criminal who felt nothing. don’t ever forget that.

she lifted her own and gestured wildly to drive home just what it was that she was trying to explain, then shook her head and realized that it made her feel ridiculous. whatever. if he didn’t get it after that then he just wouldn’t get it at all. not like it was a particularly funny joke anyway. stereotypes were too easy to poke fun at and a cheap gimmick to fall back on.

“tell ya what. i got another one for ya, if that one didn’t flip your skirt.”

not that her jokes were particularly good, but she had a lot of them. her dad had a million of them to tell when she was younger, and she remembered them all. but when you missed someone, you tended to carry a lot of that kind of thing with you, no matter if the jokes were funny or not.

“a man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm, right? and he says to the bartender, ‘a beer for me please, and one for the road.’ ‘cause... y’know. he’s got a piece of the road tucked under his arm?” a pause, then, “... yeah, i don’t think i’m the one to go to for material, honey. at least not before i’ve had a lot of time to think about what i’m gonna say. sorry.”
