Social Anxiety/Phobia
Today, some chick tried to tell me that she has social anxiety.
And yet when I mentioned my worst, most prominent symptom - being unable to look almost anyone in the eye without chickening out and staring at the floor and/or blushing heavily - she got right up in my face and repeatedly said “look me in the eye when you talk to me!”, as if she thought she was being funny by mocking a legitimate problem of mine.
I don’t know about anyone else, but if I share a problem with someone, I’m certainly not going to mock them about it, because I’d be right there sharing their shoes. Hell, I’m not going to mock anyone for a serious problem that they have, whether I, too, have, it or not. You don’t tease someone because they can’t do something you can. It doesn’t matter how healthy of a sense of humor I have; this stung quite a lot.
It just really pisses me off when people claim they have some kind of disorder or real phobia when, in reality, they’re just seeking attention and “pity points”.
This girl is one who mocks, teases, and puts me down for nearly everything I do wrong. She tells me “wow” or “good job” in a sarcastic tone when I do something that isn’t up to her standard, even if it is any sort of accomplishment for me, or she tells me “you’re fine” or “you’re okay” in a condescending tone if I’m stressed about something that she deems to not be worthy of being a stressful thing. She doesn’t show a single sign of understanding what I feel when I have to face people. And yet she has the audacity to claim she has a legitimate phobia. Why? I haven’t got a clue.
Moral of the story; don’t make fun of people or tease them for something they can’t help. That includes everything from skin color, to appearance, to their sexuality, their gender, their passion, their problems... just don’t. It’s not their fault. They’re probably very well aware of it, and possibly embarrassed and/or insecure about whatever it is. Nobody needs you to point it out. Don’t make them feel like something that makes them unique is something they should be ashamed of. And, for the love of God, don’t take on some disorder you don’t have just to make yourself unique or to get attention from other people. It doesn’t make you look cooler at all.
