Hi! New to DF and following the wiki startup guide. I chose a location for my fortress that didn't say it had an aquifer, but when I channeled an entrance, it says it's full of carp and sturgeon everywhere I move the cursor. Is it likely I AM over an aquifer after all and should pick a new location entirely, or can digging too close to small underground lakes spill water/fish into your fortress and I just need to rechannel?

Hello! Welcome to DF!

Normally, channelling is a poor way to make an entrance into any fort - channels can cause liquid to flow from the source to wherever you stop channelling. In effect, what’s more than likely happened is you’ve channelled the water near your zone and caused a hand-made river! 

Don’t sweat too hard over it. Channelling is good for a variety of things. Here’s what I do for successful forts:

Settle near a mountain, with a river and trees in a hot-weathered, non-evil, non-aquifier start zone. 

[d]esignate > [d]ig into the nearby mountainside to create a “entrance tunnel” into the mountain for about 1-5 blocks deep, 2 blocks wide.

[d]esignate > [j]down stairs, 1 block deep, 2 blocks wide at the end of the “entrance tunnel”.

Use [SHIFT] and [ . ] on your keyboard (as if you were going to do [>] on a keyboard) to go down a “layer”.

[d]esignate > [i]up/down stairs, placing them directly beneath the down stairs you had made. You can go down as far as you like, but honestly, Layer -10 is the better layers, as you have softer, but useable stone, with some semi-precious gems appearing in that layer.

[d]esignate > [d]ig an area 2 blocks wide, and as long as you like to make a “pathway” underground. This will serve as your main “pathway” to differing areas of your fortress’ “hub”.

[d]esignate > [d]ig “doorways” 2 blocks wide that happen off the pathway - example:

(Corridor with doors [||], Dwarves [☺], cats [c], sepiprecious gems [☼]/[%][pound symbol], with offshoots [.•] [.’], etc).

From here, you can expand your rooms outwards by [d]esignate > [d]ig into larger spaces for Stockpiles, workshop spaces, temples/bars/libraries, et al.

I hope this helps as a “starter guide” for making quick, effective fortresses. If managed well, spaced well, separated out by appropriate layers, you can effectively run an efficient, strong fortresses that can last a couple of years without much improvement. c:

Dude I get so fucking pissed when I see that shit like holy fuck fam I was THERE when tumblr decided it was a fun idea to demonize bisexual people and when I see people do the same thing to ace people I just go into angry mom mode because honestly that shit is fuckin ridiculous and NOBODY deserves to go through what myself and all the other bi people on this festering trash pit of a site went through.
