Akechi stood up and circled around the table towards Amamiya. “I want you as my partner”, he placed his hand on the table and leaned on it, closing the distance between them. He studied Ren’s face as it turned serious.

“I support the Phantom Thieves, so I couldn’t help”, Amamiya’s voice was determined as he stared at Akechi.

“What if I didn’t mean that kind of a partner?” His flirty voice was a contrast to Ren’s.

Now that sent Ren’s mind into overdrive, searching for the right meaning of the detective’s words. When he finally got it, his eyes widened and he had to look away so that is blush wouldn’t show. Akechi was now way to close, his face was only inches from Amamiya’s and he smiled when he saw the redness in his cheeks.

“Ren-ren! Let’s hit the arcade!” Ryuji marched in the café, his cheerful voice rang through the room. He was followed by the friendly chatter of Ann and Makoto.

“Well, that’s my que”, Akechi winked and elegantly left the room, leaving blushing Ren to deal with overly enthusiastic Ryuji who didn’t notice anything.

“Let’s go!” Ryuji hugged Ren by the shoulders.

“I would like to visit the arcade too”, Makoto smiled as she reached Ren’s table.

In the end, they succeeded in making Ren join them and he managed to temporarily forget about his conversation with Akechi. At least until he got back to Leblanc and saw Akechi also arriving at the same destination. That’s an awfully convenient timing.

“So, did you think through about my offer”, he cut of his route to the door. “Will you be my partner?”

Those words made Amamiya’s mind go blank once again.

Ren fixed his tie again, still not used to the tight feeling. Even the shiny shoes felt awkward.

“Aaah, I’m so glad I found a dance partner”, Akechi’s voice sounded very cheerful as he reached Ren. He was also in a suit, the tailoring was perfect, everything on him fit like a glove. It seemed like  natural look for him. This outfit fit him even better than the one he was usually in, it somehow made him look older. “I’m a bit sad you didn’t wear a dress, though”, he smiled as he checked Ren out, scanning him head to toe. “But this doesn’t look bad either.”

Amamiya looked away again. “What are we doing here?” All Akechi gave him was the dress with the instructions to dress up and the address and time he was supposed to show up at. He ended up renting a tux, not understanding why would Akechi give him a gown.

“Solving a case”, he looked at Ren like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “But I need a partner to enter”, he pointed with his head at the entrance, where everyone entered in pairs.

“Are you sure you should be taking me then?” There were only male-female pairs.

“Of course!” He offered his arm to Ren like a gentleman, which Ren ignored. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a bad dancer, I’ll lead!” Pretending to oblivious of the real reason Ren was asking that question, Akechi lowered his arm, maybe a little disappointed, and led the way towards the entrance, providing the guard with his invitation.

“I’ll get us drinks” , with those words, Akechi disappeared into the crowd, leaving Ren to wonder what the hell was he doing there. He followed the detective with his gaze for as long as he could before he got to far.

It’s taking him a while, it crossed Ren’s mind.

“Here, here”, he appeared behind Ren’s back and pushed a champagne glass in his hand. “It’s juice”, he reassured him.

He felt that his throat was dry so he drank all the contents of the glass in one gulp, only to come to a sudden realization. “This is not juice.”

“No, it isn’t”, Akechi was smiling somewhat evilly and was sipping his own drink. “But that blush is adorable”, he noticed that Ren’s face was flush from the alcohol and now it got a deeper shade of red from his comment. “Dance with me”, his didn’t say it as a question as he extended his hand elegantly towards Ren not giving him a chance to refuse.

Almost begrudgingly, Ren accepted his hand and was led to the dance floor. Akechi swung him around with ease, pulling him close and placing one hand on Ren’s back, making him jerk a little from the touch. “Follow my lead”, his face was so close, that Ren wanted to step away, but Akechi’s hand on his back stopped him.

Akechi moved in the slow rhythm of music, pulling Ren along with him. His lead was perfect and they danced in unison.

“What about the case?” Ren’s eyes darted everywhere around him, feeling that many of the guests constantly stole glances their way and that made him feel on edge.

“Don’t look at them, look at me”, Akechi pulled Ren just enough to get his attention, but not ruin their dance. Making sure Ren was only looking at him, he maintained eye contact. “And about the case, I already solved it”, he smiled more widely.

Amamiya thought about it for a second. “When you were getting drinks?”

“Yup,” he saw the question Why didn’t you tell me so we could leave? in Ren’s eyes so he added, “but I still wanted a dance with you.”

Unable to find words to continue the conversation, Ren remained silent and Akechi didn’t try to talk more. The song was ending slowly and their legs moved less and less, until they stopped completely. Ren tried to move away, but Akechi stopped him again, pulling him closer. He released the hands they held in air only to cup Ren’s cheek. Not waiting Ren to react, he kissed him. Gently, just touching his lips lightly.

“I knew you’d be the best dance partner.”
