Same anon who said they found a small comfy fandom. When I dipped my toes into another fandom, I eagerly looked for found family fics and found almost nothing 😢 it was only ships. Why can't all fandoms have fics that focus on different kinds of relationships other than ships?

Awww I’m sorry anon 😔😔 sadly, most fandoms focus on the relationship side of things which leaves a lot of ppl who want a relationshipless fic feeling left out. Try filtering for gen fics, and if that doesn’t work then ur only option (the bad option lol) is to write them urself

this is perhaps a lame thing to ask, but i'm about to delve into lord of the rings for the first time and am a bit intimidated. what should i prepare for? should i take my time and soak it in as i begin this ride?

not lame at all! although i’m probably a terrible person to ask, given the way i approach any form of media. my first introduction to lord of the rings was being banned from watching it until i was at highschool, then my entire family watched the extended cuts together. loved it from then, i think the movies are incredible, i love all the actors for their characters, they got the essence of it right. i went on to read the series that summer but i remember struggling with them a lot (however i was about thirteen and i’m sure that wasn’t tolkien’s intended audience). there are… a lot of songs. i’ve heard other people say that the lord of the rings reads more like an extract of a history of middle earth than actual fiction, whereas the hobbit actually tells a story. 

this is gonna sound lame, but just start where it feels right? like don’t feel bad for starting with the movies, they’re a good and easy introduction and if you think you’ll be overwhelmed with the books, at least they give you a place to start. entry level knowledge. or start with the hobbit! it’s chronologically before the lord of the rings, so it’s a proper beginning of a sort (really doesn’t matter though). don’t be daunted, and truly don’t be afraid to take your time. they’re a beloved series for a reason. tolkien was an incredible author and contributed a lot to fantasy as we know it, so it’s really neat to see where a lot of tropes and conventions we know came from.

HII!! Question!! I heart you were working on your phd!! I wanna go into mathmatics and i really want to be a professor so I'll probably go the phd route, how is it?? not even the course work but. Living? do you have a nice home, even if it's small, can you have spare money? Is it an okay lifestyle for someone interested in the mundane things in life?

here's the rundown on my specific situation:

i am in the USA

i have been in the program for 4 years, and during that time I have realized that academia might not be for me long-term

i'm ok on the money front but I came in with savings

I have spare money, I don't stress about, like, buying a steam game, or buying gas

I rent, and will rent for the foreseeable indefinite future, but I need roommates for it to be viable

all my housing situations have been safe, clean, and comfortable

I qualify for SNAP

funding is always shaky (and moreso now with USA government), I know friends who lost funding and stopped getting paid and essentially had to drop out

overall: i make shit money but i live boring and alone, so it's fine

coursework was the least of my problems at this program lol

Probably it's much more illuminating to ask grad students in your specific prospective program since things like this change significantly between cities/states/location
