After you choose the color and photo you would like to use, go to http://pixlr.com/editor/  

MAKING THE BACKGROUND:

Create a new image

I make the icons pretty large, but if you wanna make them smaller, go ahead :D

To make the background, you can either make your own color use the paint bucket tool to fill in:

OR

If you want to use the EXACT colors from the resources you can get the URL of the color and then 

Go to File > Open Image URL and paste the URL you want to use.

Then go to Image > Canvas Size and enter the dimensions you want your canvas to be (I made mine 250x250). Save

What I’m about to do can be done on Pixlr or Gimp. I’ll show you both ways.

PIXLR:

Open the image you want to edit. In the Layers panel, double-click on the lock icon.

Then you use the wand tool or the lasso tool to delete the background (I recommend the lasso tool). For the lasso tool, I use the polygonal lasso tool option.

Trace the area you want to delete and then hit delete it.

Make sure you save the image as a PNG.

GIMP:

Open the image in Gimp. Go to Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel

From your toolbox select the Free Select Tool. It’s just like the lasso tool in Pixlr. 

To save go to File > Export as... and export the image as a png. 

You should have something like this:

I know the image is too large, but I’ll resize it later.

Now you can edit the picture however you want to. Also, you can use whichever program or website you want to use. I use Polarr to edit my icons. 

Make sure your edit is saved as a png. 

After I’m done editing, I go back to Pixlr or Gimp to paste my edit on the background.

PIXLR:  

Open your edit and background.

Use the marquee tool to select the whole edit and copy it.

Go to your background and paste the copied edit onto it. 

You can also add a gradient to the background but this is optional. Also, you could have done this step when making the background. 

How to add a gradient:

Before you paste your edit onto the background. Use the gradient tool to make a gradient. 

I’m going to make a white/transparent radial gradient. I start at the center and I drag until I get to the edge of the image.

You can actually stop here, but I’m extra so I edit it a little more. :)

And that’s it! :D
