GOOD MISTAKES
I've made so many mistakes
I've made so many mistakes
I've made so many mistakes
Mistakes I wish I could change
Mistakes I wish I could change
Mistakes in the past
They are in the past
I've made so many bad choices
I’ve made so many bad choices
I've made so many bad choices
Choices I wish I could change
Choices in the past
Choices I've made
They are in the past
They have no effect on the now
Choices I've made
No effect on the now,
But my mind they haunt
My heart they've blackened,
But more they've broken
I've made so many choices,
So many good mistakes
So I had a really rough night at work. In the medical field, there are things that we call “Good Mistakes”; mistakes in which don’t cause harm to the patient, but could’ve been prevented. And I made one of those mistakes last night.
I felt so absolutely terrible I wanted to cry. Looking back on it, it probably wasn’t that big of a deal. The patient was alert the whole time, she was stable, but her blood pressure dropped a little lower than I wanted it to. I called all the right doctors, I received the right orders, but I probably made a tiny lapse in judgement.
The nurse I gave report to waved it aside, said it wasn’t a big deal, and that she would’ve made the same call. And my coordinator said that it was okay. That it was a “Good Mistake.” A mistake in which doesn’t cause the patient harm, but a mistake that I will inadvertently learn from.
And I definitely learned from it! I just feel so, so bad. I am seriously emotionally bankrupt. My mind is running a mile a minute - could’ve, would’ve, should’ve - and about how that patient is doing now - did her B/P drop again? did they have to call a rapid response? were the doctors upset?
So, I’m doing the only thing I can do in this situation.
I put my favorite comfy pj’s on. Took a Xanax. Made a cup of hot chocolate. Cuddled up in bed. And started watching Inuyasha reruns.
Sigh.
As one nurse put it quite nicely, “Good mistakes keep you humble.”
Little did I know, it was the best mistake I ever made.
Did you know when you go, it's the perfect ending
To the bad day I was just beginning?
When you go all I know is
You're my favorite mistake
You’re my favorite mistake
I walked out of my job last week and honestly it was the best thing I've ever done. Like I had an interview today, I obviously need to have a job for bills, but I am THRIVING, my creativity is SOARING, I am BLOOMING.
