Dear you,
You're going to wake up one day and realize as much as it hurts to step away now, that's exactly what you need to do in order for your love to grow continuously and to be able to one day be ready to love again. Either someone new or even the same person a couple years down the road. Whether it'll be a new person, they'll be able to look pass your flaws that you see in yourself and love you for your heart, your personality, and how genuine of a person you have become in that time of growing as an individual. But if it were the same person, they'll reminisce back to a moment in time where you were the one they loved and that everything about you is still the same as if they fell in love all over again for you. They'll fall back in love with your dorky personality, your smile, and the one thing that they'll continue to cherish; you're heart. So, by stepping away now doesn't mean that you don't care or that they didn't mean anything to you because they probably meant the world to you. But it's what you think is best for not only for yourself but him. This isn't the end nor goodbye but it'll be more like until next time for the both of us or someone new.
