I had no idea about the journey#wakandaforever would take me on... I'll write about it again after most of ya'll have seen it. I will say the last time that I performed #gooddaughterplay She was here. I have been at a loss at how to approach the script since...2018. Experiencing this film has planted a seed in me to reapproach and reimagine how I might revisit the story..in book form. I don't see myself performing the show again any time in the near future. I'm not ready. I have it filmed and still share it from time to time with others. I've also written a rough draft of the pilot of the limited series. Still processing #davidarnold .. being reminded of my undergrad professor's quote: "There are many craftsmen but very few artists." David was an artist. I remember him sharing various pieces of paper of different jokes (stories) he'd told over the years on his posts..to try out over multiple performances to narrow down the best for #itaintfortheweak which was #comedicgenius I did the same with both #babygirlplay and #gooddaughterplay before I staged them... Too many people throw up first drafts without really doing the work. He did the work most don't. He didn't it do it the easy way. He perfected it. He leaves a legacy for the artists of the future. Comedians or not. He did not half-ass his work! I am thankful for the reminder. The confirmation that I must stay on my path. I planned to post my news about joining the #wga yesterday. Instead I reflected on the artistry and commitment of a fellow artist whose work and mentorship directly affected several in my circle. Zero degrees of separation. Again. His daughters have a lot to be proud of and a dad that ADORED them. I'm glad they have each other. (I lost my dad as a teenager too.) His wife had a great love and partner. That experience can never be taken away. It's PRICELESS. Many never know such a love. His friends had a loyal brother. His family had a lot to be proud of. David overcame addiction and SOARED! His students had a lifelong mentor and cheerleader. (I had aspired to join them one day...Told him so too!!) His fans have the stories he left behind to enjoy. Us fellow artists? We have an example to follow. He was right. This sh** ain't for the weak. This is #survivalofthefittest for real. He had 27 years in this game!! David was a good man in Hollywood. A good man period. Day of the memorial I put together for the benefit of her son from another mother. How we met is another story I tell in #gooddaughterplay I hope he is doing well. What a difference 4 years makes. This speaks to me on so many levels. As I approach 4 years since @dorothyknows got her wings I'm still figuring out my life as a " #motherlesschild" .. but as I conclude in #gooddaughterplay I never will be because all of the mothering she gave me I still possess. I made a lot of changes 4 years ago.. and I'm still finding my way...but knowing she is still with me remains a GREAT comfort.. Especially the small way she shows up and sends me messages.... Well folks my original IG name was #kaypri actswrite 4 a reason. I have always done both well before #babygirlplay #gooddaughterplay #babygirltvshow etc.!! Before we #multihyphenate types had a label which caused lots of #offstage drama in undergrad... What a difference 5 years makes! In 2017 (bottom LT) I experienced the phenomenal @joethemorton onstage in his solo show #turnmeloose right before my #gooddaughterplay debut production... Yesterday I saw him onstage with my girl #brieeley doing her thing in #kinglear another truly unforgettable experience... But this was actually the 3rd time I saw him onstage. The first time was in the 90s (in my NYC days) @vineyardtheatre with my Mama - a solo play about the white woman who drove her kids into the water drowning them and blamed a Black man that didn't exist. Joe played "Him". So like most things theater and Kaypri...there is a connection to @dorothyknows 💛 because she unknowingly created a thespian by just being a patron. And I remain 4ever grateful. 🙏🏾 I also got to share this time with another talented friend (classically trained) @abrahamntonya who I met in his ATL days... This month I got a big lesson from my depression era mentality I joke about in #gooddaughterplay I am releasing my second hand life and embracing the brand new. I am investing in myself in leap of faith ways. Stepping into the unknown like never before. The time has come for me to seriously #levelup by surrendering my old thinking and claiming prosperity in every single area of my life. I will do this with #love Marie Kondo Style: Thank You. And putting in in the Get Rid Of pile. Releasing those old beliefs/thoughts/values and making room for the NEW new.
