アイルランドはダブリンより今年2月、Shelflife recordsからデビューし、両A面7インチ『Honest/I Wish』をリリースしたGoodly Thousands。 ギター・ヴォーカルのColm Dawson、ドラムのAaron Doyle、ベースのDarren Hughes からなる3ピースバンド。 80年代中頃に活躍した数々のギター・ポップバンドからの影響がみられ、The Hit ParadeやBrianを思い起こさせるものであると紹介されています。 甘酸っぱい懐かしポップ。このジャケットもまさにぴったりで惹かれます。

今回メールにて、ギター・ヴォーカルのColm氏にいくつかの質問に答えて頂きました。 Q1.“Goodly Thousands”というバンド名の由来は？ 「中等学校に通っていた頃、シェイクスピアの『マクベス』を学んだんだけど、そこに“goodly thousands”という言葉があったんだよ。今となってはばかげてるけれど、僕はその言葉を気に入ってるんだ。」 Q2.音楽を始めるきっかけは何ですか？また、あなたの音楽のルーツを教えてください。 「僕はまず11歳の頃、ボブ・ディランの曲を弾きたくてギターを始めた。それから13歳になってからは、バンドを始めるようになって曲を書くようにもなった。Goodly Thousandsは、僕がもっとジャンジャン鳴らすようなポップソングを書いていこうと決めてから2009年に結成したんだ。前のバンドよりも集中してやっているよ。」 Q3.ダブリンには多くの素敵なアーティストがいるようですが、個人的にお気に入りのバンドはいますか？ 「沢山いるよ！GinnelsとGrand Pocket Orchestraは僕のお気に入りの二つなんだけど、Popical Islandのコンピレーションを聴けば、ダブリンにいる素敵なアーティストをもっと沢山見つけることが出来るよ。」 ※Popical Islandとは、ダブリンを拠点にしているレーベルのようなところ(でもレコードレーベルではないらしい)。つまりはダブリンのインディーポップ集団といったところです。

Q4.私たちは日本人なのですが、日本の音楽について何か知っていますか？また、興味はありますか？ 「2006年あたりにMr.Childrenのアルバムを持っていたよ。ここ数年間でいうと、トクマルシューゴの作品をよく好んで聴いていたかな。でもそんなに深くは知らないな。君たちのおすすめを教えてほしいな。」 Q5.Goodly Thousandsの演奏を目にしたいと強く願っています。いつか日本にも来てライブをしてくれますか…？ 「君が僕らの飛行機のチケットを払ってくれたら…？喜んで日本でもライブをしたいよ。実はね、アイルランド以外ではまだしたことがないんだ。」 Q6.最後に、ファンにメッセージをお願いします！ 「こんにちは！僕は時々、グーグルで検索して日本人のブログの投稿記事やレビューを訳したりするんだけど、それらの文章はとても良く書いてくれている。記事を英語に訳したらとても詩的な響きになるんだよ。僕らのデビュー7インチを手にとって聴いてくれてありがとう！次の作品を楽しみにしていてほしい！」 【bandcamp】http://goodlythousands.bandcamp.com/ 【SoundCloud】https://soundcloud.com/goodly-thousands (文・翻訳/kaori)
