Didn't finish #AlwaysAndForeverLaraJean but I did finish #LeahontheOffbeat so the real total is 58 (not including my 4 HP re-reads)! Pretty proud of myself considering this was my first full calendar year of reading post slump. Definitely couldn't have reached this total if I hadn't given audiobooks a try, best decision I made this year. A courageous and intriguing memoir of the writer who is plagued by an unknown illness which often causes her to lose her mind and spend all her earnings on getting a diagnosis. As touching as the story is, it talks of her addiction to smoking, drugs and drinking as well as her desire to recover, I felt at times the account appeared to be all jumbled up. She only gets a diagnosis of Lyme disease close to the ending. I wish there was more on her life after the diagnosis and how she coped with the illness. Most of the writing was about her illness before the diagnosis. I was very excited to read this book. As soon as I saw it in the library, I knew I had to read it immediately. There were also a lot of good reviews about the book so I thought it would be a great read to inspire myself. What better way to inspire yourself than read about hundreds of women who have defied the odds and have prospered in their chosen fields. The concept of the book was unique and to a certain extent it did help me gain an insight into the lives of the women portrayed in the book. However, I would say that I expected a lot more form this book. The author had a specific set of questions that each woman was asked to answer. All the women in the book basically just responded to those questions. After getting halfway I felt like I was reading the same thing again and again. The words of each women may have been different but the message or lesson was the same. As I went on ahead I had stopped reading the questions and was just leafing through the answers. I couldn't help but feel something was missing from the book. I think it was the emotional connection to these characters. Most of what I read made me feel like the featured women had just written what they thought readers wanted to read and a lot of it was just repetition. A better approach would have been to write about these characters and their own journey without the question answer format. Each woman would then have an opportunity to tell their own story in their own words and share their successes and failures.
