Book Review #60 of 2024--
Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Rating: 3 stars.
Read from October 6th to 8th.
I figured a vampire novel would be a perfect read during spooky season. And this one sort of delivered. It was definitely more guts and gore than I expected. Between the action and guts and gore, I actually think this would make a much better movie than it did a book. I just think that this one doesn't dive deep enough into the characters for me. We also had a ton of movement around the city, but it never felt like we were going anywhere...either physically or with the plot. Someone pointed out that the reason it felt this way for them was because the main character, Atl, was supposed to be this tight lipped, closed character who kept a ton of secrets. And it makes sense as a character choice. I just don't think it was a good one.
I also want to mention this as a note about the physical object I read: quit printing books in tiny font! How many times do I have to complain about my eye strain before publishers take me seriously?? It seems like the book was supposed to be about 320 pages in normal font, but the copy I read from was 240 pages. Insane. My eyes will never be the same.
Book #4 of 2023 📖 “Disciplines of Grace” ✍🏻 Jerry Bridges 📚Christian Living ⭐️ 4/5 Quote: “Run, John, run the law commands. But gives me neither feet nor hands. Better news the gospel brings- it bids me fly and gives me wings!” Discipline and grace are not two words I would normally interchange or expect to see in the same sentence. Yet such is the Christian life as Jerry Bridges explains in his exposition of the role grace plays in our pursuit of holiness. Just as both wings of an airplane are crucial for flight, this book reminds us that the exercise of both discipline and dependence is absolutely necessary in our walks as children of the King. What I liked most about this book was that everything led back to the gospel. The gospel shaped each truth shared and fueled each encouragement written. I’ve heard many times from various Christian teachers to “Preach the gospel to yourself daily” and reading this book was such a practical and spiritually refreshing way to do that. Titus 2:11-12 says “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” How beautiful that not only does God’s grace save us to live for him, but enable us to live for him! . . . #goodreadschallenge #bookstagrammers #readingaesthetic #ilovetoread #christianbookreviews #bookstaexplore #ilivetoread #readwriteunite #faithinspired #readbelievedo #christianbookbloggers #aspiringauthorsofig #emthewordenthusiast #bookishpost #readreadread #bookwormlife #booksonbooks #jerrybridges #thedisciplinesofgrace #pursuitofholiness #christianbooks #christianbookreview #navpress (at Grace) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpsuEU7PuJC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Have you set your @goodreads goal? Are you working on your #tbr pile? Got any other reading resolutions for 2023? Personally, I am trying this new thing where I call myself out publicly on social media in order to hold myself accountable...😳

🟣 Who else cannot wait for Season 3 as we now have a synopsis of what will happen? I am excited, even though the storyline of the show sounds different than the one in the books. However, there are key scenes that just have to be in the show. Let‘s just say: asking, mirror and carriage 😜
Are there scenes from the book you just want to see?

Do you read long books? 📖 . Since I started to take part in the Goodreads reading challenge every year, I’ve found myself choosing shorter books over longer books, just to hit my target goal, and I’m wondering if more people are like that? 🤔 Now I’m noticing I’ve lots of big books on my shelves that I still haven’t read (Including this one!) 😅 I feel like they should change the reading challenge from number of books to number of pages, just so we can’t cheat 😂 . . . #theprioryoftheorangetree #samanthashannon #bloomsburypublishing #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookcommunity #bookaddict #bookaholic #goodreadschallenge #readingchallenge #bigbooks #bookcover #yellowbooks #yellowbook #yellowaesthetic #booklover #mybookfeatures #igreads #booksta #coverlove #fantasybooks #bookpages #beautifulbooks #booklife #booksofinstagram #booksofig #bookgeek #booksandpastry #pastrylove #pastrylife https://www.instagram.com/p/CMpgG3frixU/?igshid=1t09iiyybabk1
💛 Happy Sunday! I can’t believe it’s December already. I finished my Goodreads Reading Challenge so now I feel I can just mood read without stressing. This year I realized just how crazy my tbr has gotten. I think I have almost the same amount of unread books as read books AND THAT’S JUST TOO MANY! So for 2020, I’m really going to try and tackle my stacks and stacks of tbr books.⠀ .⠀ 💛 This is my yellow shelf on my tbr bookcase. Have you read of these? I love the Grishaverse but I can’t get myself to read King of Scars when we don’t have a release date for book 2. But maybe I should just bite the bullet and wait with everyone else.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #tbr #tbrpile #bookshelf #bookshelfie #shelfie #shelfiesunday #yellowbooks #yabooks #fantasybooks #grishaverse #goodreads #goodreadschallenge #diversebooks #bookstagram #bookgram #booklove #bookcover #newbook #amreading #booksofig #bookworm #bookcommunity #sundayfunday #booknerd #bookblogger #bookblog #beautybookcorner https://www.instagram.com/p/B5jVm_hgyeu/?igshid=8s18xhh9hykg
2018/2019 (so far); it’s bittersweet a little bc my year was only better in books bc physically, it was worse but I refuse to have that be the focus - I’m very happy to have a better bookish year! books are so important to me that this will always be worth celebrating #bookstagram #booklr #books #goodreadschallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/B1hZhBjAWiy/?igshid=1x1fgth44yiwd
