My student journey hasn't been easy. Life threw me unexpected challenges, but I persevered, fueled by the love of my family and a desire for a better future.
The pandemic began during my first year at Visayas State University (VSU), where I was studying BS Computer Science – a course chosen for me by my uncle. He believed it was the perfect career path, but I felt uncertain. I wasn't sure it was right for me, and I just tried to keep up. However, his influence created immense pressure. Holding a prominent position at VSU, he frequently checked my academic progress, leaving me feeling constantly monitored. The weight of his expectations, coupled with the stress of online learning during the pandemic, took a toll.
My academic struggles combined with family issues led to a significant health decline. I became severely ill and depressed. A private doctor recommended a year-long break from my studies. I'm grateful to my supportive academic advisor who helped me navigate this difficult process and secure a leave of absence.
After a year, in-person classes resumed. While my health had improved, I still wasn't fully recovered. Then, another obstacle arose: VSU mandated complete COVID-19 vaccination for all students. The day before classes were to begin, I was still unvaccinated and unenrolled. Tears welled up as I called my mother, desperate to find a way to attend. She urged me to come home, and we discussed the situation. My parents ultimately decided against immediate vaccination due to my fragile health. However, my cousin shared that her school wasn't strictly enforcing the vaccination requirement, giving me a glimmer of hope.
This led me to transfer to STI College Ormoc, where I enrolled in BS Tourism Management – a field I'd always secretly dreamt of. As a shy, young woman, I never envisioned myself in such a high-profile career. But God had other plans. Tourism Management allowed me to explore my interests and grow in ways I never thought possible. The transition wasn't easy. Adapting to a new environment and making new friends took time and effort. Yet, I embraced the change, eager to develop my personality and build meaningful connections.
College at STI College Ormoc was expensive. Tuition, bus fare, and food were a big strain on my family. Things got even tougher as exams came closer, and I still owed money. But then, I got a scholarship! That, along with my father hard work, let me keep going to school. I don't know what I would have done without it.
My whole college experience has been full of surprises. I learned to handle tough situations and trust that things will work out. I'm stronger, more flexible, and more confident now. I'm working hard and praying to graduate and reach my goals. This unusual path showed me how important it is to keep trying, have faith, and believe in myself, even when things are unclear.
