One of the photos I took at our Octopus centerpiece photo shoot has 18.5k likes on Reddit. It is currently the top post on r/crafts subreddit. Thought I'd take a moment to check in. Lots of good things happening and very little time to post about them. Yesterday I packed up 5 pieces of the new work and sent them to the Charlie Cummings Gallery for "CupVIII: An Intimate Object." This is my first time in the show. 217 artist each with 5 cups. The show opens on October 8th and is online exclusive. I can tell you how deeply honored I am to be included in this show. To be showing next to so many of my idols is like a dream. The quality of makers in this show is unbelievable. On Friday, September 1st, the cup show "Conductivity" opens at The Companion Gallery in Humbolt, TN. It focuses on clay cups that utilize copper glazes. Some of my fav. glazes! I believe cups are available for online purchases the day after the opening. I will have 3 pieces in that show. Again a crazy huge honor. It's the first time I've had work at the CG and it's long been one of my goals to get my work in Eric Botbyl's place. Grateful! The "Tea Bowl National" opens on October 6th. I've seen the work. There are some great pieces and some great makers in that show as well. My second consecutive year being included. I have two pieces in this show as well. These shows have some of the best pieces I've ever made in them. I'm immensely proud of the work I have in them. It feels a bit crazy to be showing with such great artists. It's always been my goal to make do so however I believe my work stands up to their's. All my time and education. All my blood, sweet, and tears. The years barely scraping by, I do it all to live this life doing something I truly love. I make the most difficult pot I can. I put my best into it every time. I never make the same thing twice and don't care to. No one can make my pots but me. Took me along time to get there and I certainly didn't alway feel this way. Thought I'd show off this Wood fired, stamped and stretched, bulbous vase in honor of my Facebook page reaching over 2000 friends. I've had about 1,600 friend requests in a month and it's been a bit of an adjustment to be honest. It takes quit a bit of time to double check that there are real people behind some of those requests. In every kiln I fire, I test something, sometimes several things. There is always room in the kiln to try something I hadn't thought of before as is the case with this 11" bulbous porcelain vase. I had been playing with copper blooms and blushes about a year ago. I decided to pick it back up again and apply some of the things I've learned in my last year of making. This pot was just a quick tangent after a long day of loading and glazing. Just a quick idea and while the end result may not be perfect, I'm quite pleased with the piece. As often with my work when I add a variable to the process it opens a wonderful new direction for me. Can't wait to see where it takes me. Just a side note. My phone autocorrects the word "vase" with "case". I'm a fire bug. It's part of the reason I'm a clay artist. Today I setup and am currently burning a barrel firing full of Heather Grills pots. I was trying to really get the fire roaring when I became entranced with all the fire flying around. So of course I took a slo-mo video. Here it is...the best is at the end. Every year I get to facilitate the making of 1000+ Empty Bowls for Phoenix Fired Art's Empty Bowl Fundraiser in Joplin, Mo. Many people donate their time to make the bowls which is a great help. Each bowl in some way has been touched, manipulated, glazed or fired by me so I have a so many chances to learn something from the process. This means I have a 1000 chances to play with glaze and form. I learn so much every year. This is a time lapse video of me trimming and manipulating Empties for an hour and a half. I trim one the set it on the pedestal until the next is trimmed. ✨🤘🔥❤️⚱🤘✨I've had a really wonderful month. I was accepted into the Kansas City Clay Guild's Tea Bowl National. With the help of several gifted individuals we threw 500 or so bowls for Phoenix Fired Art's Annual Empty Bowls charity event. 5 to 700 more to come soon. And ... I'm very excited to announce that one of my vases will be included in the 2017 Potter's Council Pots With Flowers calendar. I couldn't be happier. To celebrate I played with my iPhone's time lapse and threw a twenty inch wide low bowl. I may push the contour of the bowls rim down further tomorrow after its had a chance to stiffen up a bit. So I sent of this pic to be considered for the Potter's Council 2016 Flowers In Pot Calendar. It would be amazing to be accepted. Heather bought the flower from The Wild Flower in Joplin. I love how it looks in my ash glazed vase. It's been a good day. I sold an expensive sculpture. I'll be throwing in the middle of Main Street tonight at Joplin Third Thursday Festival so come down and say hello. Also Friday and Saturday the 24th and 25th is Phoenix Fired Art's annual Empty Bowls Bowl-A-Thon. All the wheels are full on Friday but on Saturday we still have a few open spots so if you can throw or hand build bowls and want to donate your time and skills to helping fight hunger in Joplin please message me.
