Visual diary #7 | SIDEWALKLABS
Sidewalk Labs is a group within Alphabet that exists to solve a singular problem: to reimagine how cities can improve quality of life. Sidewalk Labs is a pilot program within Google that has partnered with the city of Toronto to explore new ideas around leveraging technology within cities. This group believes that technology has more to offer in terms of how we plan, structure, and build our cities. They are using this opportunity to test assumptions in an attempt to inspire and lead other cities around the world.
This isn't just a concept either. Sidewalk Labs will be designing a singular district in Toronto's Eastern Waterfront. Sidewalk Labs is exploring the following topics (and more!), as part of their search for the most human-centered city plan:
Sustainability. How can a cities infrastructure adapt to its surroundings and reuse energy to create a truly "climate-positive neighborhood."
People first. Parks and public areas should be more accessible, safe, and comfortable. Sidewalk Labs is investigating ways to leverage emerging technologies to ensure their model makes the best use of existing infrastructures.
Communities. Take a holistic approach to social services to ensure all people have what they need at an affordable price.
Digital transformation. Technology has come a long way since most of our cities were built. How can we leverage the tremendous progress we have made to address the mounting problems our cities are facing?
I think Alphabet is a design leader, utilizing this group to explore huge problems that will face future generations. They werenât assigned or commissioned to take this on. They saw the problem and realized they had the potential to offer a solution. That responsibility and self-awareness are the traits of a design leader.

Video Marketing for Tech Startups
I was watching a kickstarter video this morning and I saw something Iâve seen a hundred times. People think itâs their video that gets them the funding or not on kickstarter. Â Iâve helped startups, global companies, non-profits and entrepreneurs raise millions of dollars by producing, filming, directing, and even editing their films. Â The crazy thing is, and Iâm telling you this as someone who was marketing and directed these films that raised millions of dollars, itâs not the video. Â When you think itâs the video you go in one of two directions. Â You say that you have no budget and you make a shite (spelled correctly =) video yourself. Â Itâs unprofessional, it makes you look bad, and the worst part of it all is even more than the time it took to create that garbage, the emotional hope that you put into it is gone and you have to start over again when youâre not funded. Â The other direction is you spend good money because you want it done well because you understand that you want it done right. Â This type of direction is sort of better off because it has the ability to scale. Â You spend 8k, 15k or 30k creating your marketing and itâs off to the races. Â Some companies go even further and hire PR teams and "marketing professionalsâ (quotes intended) which puts them into the 100k bracket but still not funded or where they want to be. My companies were the happy recipients of those 6-figure price tags but they happened to luck out because I know that at the end of the day itâs not about their marketing. Built into marketing there is certainly a public speaking component and thatâs even part of the reason Iâm here right? Â Having acted in and produced commercials that generated millions of dollars, acting, presenting and public speaking in commercials all go together. Â But public speaking is the Peretoâs principle of it all. The number one thing I see in the companies, kickstarter campaigns, and pitches that causes them to fail is that theyâre weak in public speaking and presenting. Â I donât mean that they didnât memorize their pitch or that they froze up because they didnât. Â Some of them were well polished and even shared all of the details accurately, but it flopped. Â Why? Â Because public speaking is more than not getting nervous, looking cool, or blabbing on about your tech. Â The scariest part to all of this is that you want someone else to simply do it so you hire a CEO to talk or a salesperson to sell. Â That works for the short term but at some point youâll have to tackle the part that Sequoia venture capital verifies. Â The new product, the new investment, is you. Â People. Â A person. Â Thatâs what the people want. Â Thatâs what we work on. Â Thatâs what we transform so that you are the company that can handle a multimillion dollar valuation or billion dollar valuation. If you need help with public speaking. Â If you have a video youâre preparing or prepared and it didnât work or youâre about to get ready to market. Â You can keep your momentum but instead of ending up on a different planet by being just 1 degree off, letâs talk first. Â Itâs beyond worth it and Iâve seen it and felt the pain too many times. Thinking about funding non stop, going through the effort of going for funding and then it falling through hurts. Â The pain of failing sucks but even worse is the hope that you had built up that it would work and then it doesn't. Â The cost of putting of your funding or valuation by 1 month or 6 months or 1 year can be $100k or more depending on the value of your company or the funding youâre going after. Â Think about that. Calculate that cost because thatâs where the money is really going. Â Making payroll, scaling, paying bills, filling your bank account, being taken seriously, being believed and making it to the point that youâre a real startup or real company is the real value that is being traded for years of wasted time and pain. Â Does that make sense? Â I see this all of the time and it doesnât have to be that way. Send me a message and weâll get on a call and see what we can do to create the perfect plant to getting you funded and nailing your pitch. Â Weâll talk about whatâs not working or what could be working better or what needs to happen and design from there without all of the public practice and wasted time and humiliation and boring public speaking stuff. Big fan of this brilliant #logo seen at #googleventures this afternoon. #google #design #googleplex (at Mountain View, California)
Following the design sprint methodology - www.gv.com/sprint - can get great results for answering questions quickly through design, prototyping and testing. To keep my team (and me!) organised, I've made my own calendar using post-its and sharpies where I can track what is happening on each day and who needs to be involved. Stick it on a wall in your exam space so everyone can stay on track.
It's here! #sprintthebook #tw #googleventures
