Googly Eyes, August Ponthier & Joy Oladokun - Jesus & John Wayne | Official Video
googly eyes
When I was looking for the best songs from 2025 I was stunned by this song. I really like it. It's so smart and heartfelt. And it made me curious to turn more of my attention to Exvangelicals.
I've had most of January off work and it's been awfully cold. It's just my luck to begin my vacation with the murder of Renée Good. I've spent most of my vacation doomscrolling. And because of my wanting to know more about Exvangelicals I've been seeing lots of them in my feeds.
Over the years atheists have shown themselves to be some of the most virtuous people I've known. That's almost certainly true about many Exvangelicals who are Atheists now. But for the most part the Exvangelicals I've been following are Agnostic, Skeptics and Seekers. I have long followed some wise and religious people online. As I get back to work and have less time I may well prune away of my Exvangelical follows. Sometimes all of it seems too preachy even for me.
Neverthless, my recent online turn has proven valuable to me. It's nice to be among those who cannot think as they once and now are engaged in learning, imagining, building and testing what to think now.
The title of googly eye's song may allude to a book: Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation by Kristin Kobes Du Mez.
My nice little car, the 2005 RAV4, has gone the way of all good things.
It never stopped running, but came back from a recent oil change with a bill of health that called for repairs worth more than double its trade-in value. So alas, that was that.
Speaking of trade-in value, I was offended on the RAV's behalf that the official number was $700. That was mostly down to high mileage - more than 217,000 - but it didn't help that the car had survived a bad encounter with a deer back in 2015. The deer was not so lucky.
In any case, I loved my little car for all 200,000 miles we rode around together, and spent its last few days taking photos of all of its funny little details, like the AC button with the paint completely worn off, and the strange odds and ends that have accumulated in nooks and crannies over the last 16 years.
The man who hauled the RAV away said that, as a high-mileage trade-in, it is headed for a wholesale auction and will probably end up at a dealership of the "Steve Says Yes!" persuasion. I like to think it will have a whole other life as somebody else's solid little car... but I was still sad to see it loaded on a truck.
My new car is a much newer RAV, because why mess with a good thing? Here's to another 200,000 miles.

Something different for today. Meet Heriberto, the sentient cactus!
This is surprisingly not from my dnd game but from a Changeling oneshot. I finally got the chance to be a player again, and my Eshu lady (a librarian in her 40s who can be defined as vodka aunt TM) keeps a few plants in her home. She often talks to the cactus, and one of them just sprouted sentience. She isn’t quite aware of that though!
I didn’t know I needed this. Thanks Overwatch
So I put googly eyes on my orange juice
