You never meant anything to me.

The words didn’t register at first. For Matthew Rios to say something so cold. Something so cruel and hurtful. It didn’t make sense… Mattie wasn’t like that, he didn’t say malicious things, he didn’t hurt people, he was nothing but warmth and kindness. He was her personal sun for years, orbiting her in her darkest days, doing anything and everything he could to ensure that she was happy, no matter how selfish she behaved with him. Him saying those words to her made her feel like she was going to be sick, her throat was closing up and stomach twisting in knots, staring up at the stern expression painted across his features.

“You don’t mean that,” Pain was clinging to her words, voice thick and shaky as she fought back the stinging tears that were filling her eyes, the thought of Mattie ever feeling that way about her something so unfathomable that it felt like what was left of her sorry excuse for a life was ending, “Mattie I know I messed up… I know I… I made mistakes but you’re my best friend,” Her words got stuck in her throat, coming out in a breathless whimper before she sniffled and wiped at her eyes, “We just need time and I can make it up to you, I know I can Mattie okay?” She pleaded now, daring to reach out to touch him, but stopping short, too scared of what it would feel like to have him pull away from her, she couldn’t handle any more rejection from him.

She had to take a breath now, looking down at ground between them, trying her hardest to control the sobs that were building up in her throat, clawing at her to be let out but she couldn’t… she couldn’t cry in front of him now… she had to be strong because if she cried she had a feeling he wouldn’t comfort her, not like he used too. “I just want to go back to how things were,” She breathed out, glancing back up at him now, biting hard at her lower lip before sniffling, “Please Mattie I’d do anything… please, I love you.”
