goopworld bugs
hey, i've been producing music for a while but i still feel like i'm struggling to find my own sound, and like my stuff is too derivative of other artists' work. have u ever dealt with that before?? and do u have any tips for overcoming it
there’s sooooo much music out there that anything u make will probably sound like smth else, but “dont worry about it” is a bad answer uh
here’s some things i like to do when i feel stuck in a rut
next time you do something without thinking (i have to structure the track around 2 drops, i have to use this genre-appropriate drum groove, i’ll write in the same key as always) stop and do something else. especially if you think it’s a bad idea. force it to work. you’re good at mixing, you can do this. there’s no rules
force yourself to carry a track to completion from a weird starting point. decide to write in 5/4 or 7/4 or 15/16. or synthesize all your drums. or only use one vst. use NO vsts and resample everything.
^ when i wrote the intro to “tournament arc” i decided i wanted to make my kick out of a snare, make my snare out of a hat, and make my hat out of a cowbell. just stupid sample manipulation and EQ. i think it sounded weird n cool
whatever you usually write first, write it last, and vice versa. you will sound like a different songwriter
do some SOUND DESIGN. i cant tell you how cool and useful it is to just mess around with sounds until you find something new and interesting. once you hit a cool sound, record it so you can sample it back later, or save the synth preset or w/e. it's good practice to flex your sound design muscles
download a new (free) sample pack and use it. those things tend to have really specific vibes, so you’ll be sorta pulled in a new direction
download synth1. click "opt" and go to "colors." this lets you change the colors of synth1. i like #efaabd and #2d1b20
listen to stuff you dont write and get inspired. and i dont just mean EDM
cross over with another genre. sounding derivative of 2 or 3 wildly different things, is often the same as sounding original
hope some of that helps <33
would u consider ba ba dook and hereditary to also be mom horror? or is being bad/mediocre a requirement
ive never seen the babadook so idk but hereditary is like. horror for people who listen to hozier
